So was our friend.
The late, great comedian Jerry Clower watched it from the deck of the a naval ship off the coast of Japan.
And the NASA guys that fly high during the height of meteor showers.
Impossible to survive that close.
Watching the video, it sounds like the first atomic bomb test when England got the bomb. It appears that England didn’t take the same safety/distance precautions that America did with all the above ground testing we did. Still, I’m really sorry for those guys.
Yes— there were two killed by the “Demon Core” of refined plutonium— and both times establishing experimentally the “criticality” of the purified core. The core was “retired” from any bomb production, as research reveals- and was eventually melted down and re-shaped/re-used in other nuclear bomb components. They were very much pushing the edge— and it killed them. Healthy respect for these Elements.
The process called “ Tickling the Tail of the Dragon” (abused/appropriated term— by druggies who “smoked crack mixed with heroin” and called it “chasing the dragon”. This criticality being far more lethal in a very short time, than some junkies who thought/think they are braving death).
For the Desert Rock tests in the 1950s, US troops were seven miles from the blasts; they were then sent in after a few minutes to "invade" the area near where the bomb went off. Regarding the 100 yards idea -- the *sound* of the bombs were so loud that humans needed to be miles away, or the sound alone would be sufficient to kill them. The Saturn V was the second loudest thing made by humans, and crowds and ground crew had to be miles away from the launch.
Remember who put these veterans there, then recall actions & advice from the same source,
1. Much of the country was dosed without their knowledge (downwinders), including my parents,
2. Nuclear energy (originating from antique power plants beyond their design life) is safe & clean,
3. Radiation in the Pacific from the meltdowns at Fukushima is safely ‘diluted’ and poses no health risk whatsoever,
4. Thimerosal was never dangerous,
5. The vaccine schedule is absolutely safe,
6. Cholesterol is evil (as was butter & eggs),
7. Fluoride carries no health risks, and
8. Glyphosate is harmless.
I could go on ad nauseam, but I have to go to work in the morning to support the Fed’s printing of worthless paper.
Oh, yeah:
9: Endless deficits never hurt anyone.
