I have heard of some cultures that do this....admittedly, not very appealing to those of us in the West. The claim is it is nutritious, etc. I dunno. Makes me wanna puke.
The placenta is essentially a body part of the infant that consists of a mass of blood, blood vessels, and connective tissues. It cannot possibly contain any nutritional value that is unavailable from food sources. And eating it is disgusting.
Down on the dairy farm, my Dad made every effort to prevent any cow from eating her “afterbirth”. He claimed it decreased their milk production if they are it. I can’t see any benefit to cattle in eating it. AFAIK, they are pretty strict vegetarians all their lives. Certainly not carnivorous.
Its been going on for centuries. Still very gross. I watched my wifes gynecologist inspect the placenta from my first child. He placed it under a large brightly lit magnifying glass and methodically stretch it out looking and sniffing it. Yes were talking nose almost touching it. When done he placed it in a tin pan with a clear liquid already in it. Im sure they save them either to sell or perform research on.
I never asked but he did offer it to me and told me some eat them. I politely declined and said wrong culture.

Am pretty sure they do it the “right” way.
