(CNN)Childhood cancer is draining, frightening and painful. A mother in Texas shared an unfiltered peek into how the disease impacted her family. Kaitlin Burge posted stirring photos of her 4-year-old son, Beckett, leaning over a toilet, with his 5-year-old sister, Aubrey, standing guard. Beckett was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia over a year ago. "Vomiting between play sessions. Waking up to throw up. Standing by her brother's side and rubbing his back while he gets sick," she wrote. "This is childhood cancer. Take it or leave it.

Burge said she took the photos in January, but they depict a "typical day in the life" for her son. Beckett takes a chemotherapy pill every night in addition to monthly trips to a clinic where he receives chemo through a port, and with chemo comes nausea.

Her children make sacrifices for their brother The photos, she said, show the reality of childhood cancer and its implications across families.

I’m into the 5th day of a virus and I was moaning like a sick 100 year old lady two days ago.

These kids are so tough.

The treatments have gotten so much better and more targeted.

But you’re right, those two words together send a chill down any feeling person’s spine.

Once upon a time ALL was a fatal disease. George W Bush’s baby sister died of it. Today 90% of kids are cured with chemotherapy and those that aren’t, have other options.

Our youngest daughter beat ALL when she was ten. She's now in nursing school and wants to work in Oncology.

12 years ago they told us the success rate was only 60-70%. Glad to know that has increased. It was absolute hell to go through with a child.

I hope you get the treatment plan that you need.
Is your ObamaCare policy paid up?
I am half serious. Some people who don’t agree with the philosophy behind that plan don’t have many other choices.
One does what they have to do to heal.

I worked for years in a big city ER and saw more suffering and death than I care to recall. Because our hospital was literally next door to a major pediatric hospital ours didn't treat kids...everybody,including ambulances, knew to take kids next door.

As difficult as it was to watch an 80 year old...or a 20 year old...die of cancer, heart attack, car accident or gunshot wound there's no way in Creation I could have watched a 5 year old die. There's no way that I could have avoided complete insanity!

Outstanding!

Given her personal experience...and her dedication...she'll bring a skill and compassion to her work that will lessen the fears of many, many people.
