How shark attacks are pitting US conservatives against liberals

In Cape Cod, right-wing demagogues are using the politics of fear to demand a mass cull of sharks and seals. ..snip.. It turned out that the aftermath also fit the pattern of 9/11, demonstrating once again how statistically low-risk but viscerally alarming threats – especially when those threats come from perceived foreign elements or new arrivals – are ripe for demagoguery. Two days after Medici’s death, Howie Carr, a talk-radio host in nearby Boston, took time out from railing against the “Mueller witch-hunt” to warn of “the growing menace” on Cape Cod, being abetted by “environmental extremists.” a Cape radio host, Patrick Desmarais, could veer between his circumspect attitude to gun control in the wake of massacres in Texas and Ohio, and his unshakeable certainty on the shark question. “I’m a cull-the-seals-and-sharks guy,” he told his listeners. .snip..

The guest on both shows was County Commissioner Ronald Beaty Jr., a right-wing Republican who rode Donald Trump’s coat-tails into office in traditionally liberal Cape Cod, despite having once served federal prison time for mailing death-threats to George H.W. Bush. ..snip..

Meanwhile, the group is united in their view of “the environmental extremists,” whom they perceive to be pushing a “pro-shark agenda” behind closed doors, loyal only to their research and fundraising. Their anger focuses on the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, a local non-profit taking advantage of the unprecedented opportunities to observe and tag sharks in shallow water. The Conservancy’s public safety message, often blithely delivered, is that responsible humans have no choice but to surrender the habitat, to what Kartsounis called “a Jurassic state.” ..snip..

Trump himself, according to his own tweets and the testimony of Stormy Daniels, also seems to have long harboured an intense personal animosity towards sharks.

“The livestock loss to wolves is huge.”

Nay, it’s negligible.

Most calves and cattle are lost to Coyotes of all things.

And predation is the least likely cause of death in Cattle and Sheep.

I bet things would change in an instant if Sasha or Malaria Obola were shark attacked in the surf at Martha’s Vineyard.

Interesting USDA survey report. It sure doesn't jibe what I hear from ranchers and hunters in north Idaho. The elk herds have been decimated by wolves (probably close to true decimation - reduction by 90%).

Wolves in the West: Wolf management in Idaho

I tend to not trust government reports as they are generally pro-environmentalist and anti-rancher / anti-business.

You don't have a shark problem, you have a government problem.

To mitigate (not solve)the shark problem, the Cape Cod Towns have hired a group of "experts" to make suggestions this fall, for implementation for next summer.(2020)
Every idea will get backlash, but I hope some practical, sensible ideas will get implemented.

Don't think for one minute different groups aren't figuring out how to make money off this shark situation, legally and illegally.
This will muddle the situation further. -Tom

Trump himself, according to his own tweets and the testimony of Stormy Daniels, also seems to have long harboured an intense personal animosity towards sharks. Really?

They get that from Stormy Daniels testimony and tweets Trump has sent since then.
Here is Stormy's testimony:

“The strangest thing about that night — this was the best thing ever. You could see the television from the little dining room table and he was watching Shark Week and he was watching a special about the U.S.S. something and it sank and it was like the worst shark attack in history. He is obsessed with sharks. Terrified of sharks. He was like, ‘I donate to all these charities and I would never donate to any charity that helps sharks. I hope all the sharks die.’ He was like riveted. He was like obsessed. It’s so strange, I know.”

Environmentalists caused the whole problem by adding shark food (seals, otters and sea lions) to the protected list - now there are more of them than ever before - and more sharks then ever before.

I’m good with letting sharks cull the liberal herd, so there’s that. Of course the problem is that the occasional non-liberal will be eaten as well, so that complicates the picture.

SoCal is now having this same problem. After maybe 100 years of having shark-free beaches, Great Whites began to show up like the homeless do on our streets. We have had three bad shark attacks since maybe 2015. No deaths, but really bad injuries. Shark Lives Matter. Yours don’t.

Sharks are not needed. They are top tier predators but there are many others who are not so dangerous to humans. Get rid of them. Had our ancestors been so tender hearted toward blood thirsty killers we wouldn’t be here. Time for the man in the grey suit to join the endangered list and make room for some nice Kosher Tuna.

There is certainly a higher loss to wolves in the mountain west, and Mountain Lion too.

But that’s 1/3 of the US herd at best. The stats are watered down by the other 2/3 that never see anything bigger than a Coyote or wild/feral dog.

And still, even those little bastards get their share.

Ranchers abutting wilderness and grazing on BLM land in the west probably suffer triple the predation compared to any other area of the country.

Big cats being the primary killer.

The axiom is: Those who graze their herds in west are going to lose healthy animals to predators. And killing all the predators has enormous negative effect on the ecosystem. They are like the garbage collector, a nasty necessity.

And don't forget the white sharks are protected also.

If they weren't protected they would be wiped out in Mass. as they were, before the Federal protection.- Tom

One answer is to pass a federal law that sharks are prohibited from attacking humans??

Sort of like the “Gun Free Zones” & we know how well that such zones work.

ODDLY, MANY “Shark Conservationists” are QUITE politically rightist. Further, many of us are “catch, measure, tag & release” fishermen.

Further, many LEFTISTS want the sharks “killed out” so that the “Progressives” can swim anytime/any place that they wish in perfect safety.

Yours, TMN78247
