Yeah i knew you could save changes, then ‘reburn’ the changes to a new disk (or to thumb drive) so that it includes all the changes you made, but not too sure how to do that- never really looked into it- I shoudl though, As I’ve got a LOT of changes I’ve made to my linux install, and would liek ot burn it’s current state onto a DVD so that i don’t have to keep making changes whenever I have to reinstall for whatever reason

I get too confused about which files are needed when trying to install from stynaptic- it seems there’s a bunch of versions or something- or needed extra files, dependencies etc- and I’m never sure which ones are actually needed and which ones belong to a different version of the program IO’m looking at-
I really should learn how to install from synamptic though because like you said- it’s more recent on many things-
I’m sure it’s probably a lot simpler than I think it is- but it just seems confusing to me-
Try using the synaptic rather than the command line for downloads. everything available for command line download is also available in synaptic, just type in the name. In other words if the instructions for the app are for the command line, running it through synaptic will do all that for you instead of needing the command line. Synaptic turns the command line function into a point and click graphic interface and it’s easier to use.
I have three expensive software packages that I which will not run on Win 10. If I want to keep using those packages, and I do, I must continue using XP. Once that becomes unusable I will purchase Linux versions.
here is something else cool about linux, I have trusted the dependencies they suggest I also need for two years now and they have never steered me wrong or broke anything. They take pride that the system and actions are trustworthy. The only time I had any issues was when I went outside the linux system to a third party download. But this happens in Windows too. Takes just a few seconds to go take a snapshot of your system with “timeshift” before doing 3rd party app dowloads outside the trusted linux system repository so you can put it back as it was.

Then just pop the disk in, reboot your system, and a menu will coem up to boot to the CD- choose that and off you go into the wild blue yonder of linux nirvana lol
Okay, I'm trying it now. I (hopefully) have it burned to disk. I'll restart my computer now and see if there's a prompt that lets me boot up from the disk.
I'll let you know what happens in a minute or two.

Alright, it appears that I’ve already done something wrong. I rebooted the computer with the new Linux disk and nothing happened. Same boot up procedure as usual - and I’m still in Windows 10.
I’m wondering if the DVD even recorded the OS from the site. How can I tell?
lol, just an analogy. Somethings you just get stuck with and want to use until it can’t be used anymore. like the software you still like or an antique teapot that still makes good tea even though new ones are available.
And to add to the mix of ignorance, are those biting on “one password for all” being offered here and there.
People like this should really make life simple and use their social security numbers as their universal password, after all it is more that 8 characters.
Just a copy of the files will not boot. It has to be written to the disk as a bootable “ISO image”. Do you have 7 or 10?
I did that the first time too. lol
Keep in mind once you do have it right; it takes awhile to boot it from the disk. The screen will go black for quite awhile because it has to load the whole 2 gigs to temp storage in the computer before it comes on line for you. Once you actually decide to install it, it will boot FAST. :)

But what went wrong during the download process? I put a fresh DVD into my disk tray and clicked on one of the US download sites.
A window popped up asking whether I want to open the file or save it. I chose save, thinking it would copy the files to the disk, but it saved them to my computer instead.
What did I do wrong?

Yep, it killed my desktop search, and I use that feature all the time. Annoying as hell not to have it.
I think probably you didn’t burn it as an ISO- If you have windows 10, right click on the file you downloaded, and choose ‘Burn disk image”
Hopefulyl htis is all you have to do- if it still doesn’t work- let us know- there are other methods to burn an iso
You are good, that is what you want! always download into the PC first, because the PC has the tool to create the ISO image disk for you. Have you written to the disk yet? If so delete what you have on the disk. and I will give you the process from there.
