Today we are going to take a look at the top 10 most popular sports in the world. But before we do that it is important to know the importance of sports and criteria that should be used to make a ranking of sports.

Sports play an important role in our lives. From early childhood years where we take sports very seriously to the later years in life where we consider it as a hobby, fitness ritual, and sometimes even a profession. Today in every part of the world some sport is passionately followed. People take their sporting heroes as their role models and often have an emotional attachment with their favourite sports stars and sports teams. People in different regions of the world have different favourite sports. This makes ranking sports quite a challenging and difficult job. This is exactly why it is hard to ascertain the reliability and accuracy of different sports lists out there.

Here, it is important to know exactly what do we mean by most popular sports. The word “popular” could mean “most-watched sports,” “most played sports,” or “most revenue-generating sports”. But in all honesty, it would be unfair to rank the sports by popularity, if we take just one or two criteria. Therefore, we have decided to use 15 different criteria in order to rank the most popular sports in the world.

Criteria Used for Ranking:

  1. Global Fan Base and Audience
  2. Viewership on TV
  3. TV Rights Deals
  4. Popularity on Internet
  5. Presence on Social Media
  6. Number of Professional Leagues in the World
  7. Average Salary of Athletes in the Top Leagues
  8. Sponsorship Deals
  9. Number of Countries in Which the Sport is Popular
  10. Biggest Competition
  11. Relevancy Throughout the Year
  12. Gender Equality
  13. Access to the General Public
  14. Number of Amateur Players in The World
  15. The prominence of the sport in sports headlines on print and electronic media

Hockey is a very expensive sport to play. It’s really become a sport for wealthy suburbanites.

My favorites (FWIW) are lacrosse, handball and arena football.

If you wanna watch a sport the US could really kick a lot of butt in, watch handball. It’s fast paces and high scoring. But there very little in the way of youth or feeder leagues in the US.

I dunno. That graphic I posted there shows a Russian floating a magnificent saucer pass to an American who scores the goal. The game was played in New York. LOL.

Don’t cricket matches last for days?

They can last for days. But cricket has developed variations where a complete game can finish in 3 hours or so. But cricket is wildly popular in South Asia. If you haven’t watched it, you might give it a try. It’s a little like baseball, but imagine trying to hit the ball and every pitch in in the dirt. And the bowler (pitcher) can get a running start to deliver the ball. You are out if the bowler can manage to hit the wicket behind you, or if you hit the ball and it is caught—only one fielder gets to wear gloves. Some batters score over 100 runs (a century) before getting out.

And there is strategy involved as well. If the other team can’t seem to get your team out, you can choose to stop batting—because if they can’t get in their innings before darkness or rain—the game ends as a tie. England may have lost the Ashes because rain interrupted a game they were winning against Australia.

Some batters score over 100 runs (a century) before getting out.

Think about that. You basically have to bat for a period of several hours, without making one mistake. That's like asking Mike Trout to see a hundred pitches, without swinging and missing once, or hitting a fly ball that is caught.

I find it hard to watch any sport like soccer or cricket that is so primitive it could have been played in its modern form by cave men.

"Hey, Oog ... if we can't beat them, just put down the mastodon bone and don't bat anymore. It'll get dark in a while, so the game will end in a tie."

And in Cricket, if you are hit by a pitch, you’re out! (Leg Before Wicket)

And getting up at 3 am for rink time!

Years ago, Minnesota HS hockey was dominated by the rural schools up north. In the 60’s the suburban schools started building ice rinks. Since then the better teams are usually from the suburbs with the money for ice time, summer clinics, lots of young youth clubs that feed into the High Schools, etc.

Although shooting isn’t exactly cheap. $1000 for a reasonable entry level over and over shotgun. Each practice might be 100 clay pigeons ($20). Four Boxes of shells another $25.

Although I guess that is still a lot cheaper than hockey rink time?

That is why soccer is so widespread - it’s cheap and simple. I don’t care to watch soccer. I used to coach my daughter’s team though and had lots of fun with it. And the kids did too - anybody can play it and be useful on a team at the grade-school to Junior high level.

There's one rural Minnesota town that still turns out great hockey players! This documentary from NBC Sports is well worth the 25+ minutes of your time:

The Road Through Warroad

The population of Warroad is about 1,800. They've produced seven Olympic hockey players and five who have played in the NHL.

The best story involves Gigi Marvin -- a real cute babe who has played on the U.S. Women's National Team. She played on boys teams until she was 13, and describes an incident where she got into fight during a game with future NHL star T.J. Oshie. LMAO.

Field hockey is not the fourth most popular sport in the world.

It could be. Some people even say its #2 or #3. Cricket is #2 because of the Indian subcontinent, not so much because of England or Australia. Field hockey is big in India and Pakistan and is also played in Europe. Add all the girls who play it in North America, and that's a lot of people. For some reason America decided that girls play field hockey and when boys do something called "lacrosse", but it's not like that in other parts of the world.
