A reader who, in this day of blacklists, must remain anonymous, sends this observation about our soldiers in Afghanistan:
It's not unusual for the French to comment on anything American and normally in the negative. What is rare is a Frenchman saying something positive about Americans; in this case heaping praise on our soldiers in Afghanistan. Blogger and veteran Wes O'Donnell has translated an editorial in a French newspaper from a French soldier serving with a prestigious U.S. infantry battalion. I recommend reading the whole thing. Here are some excerpts:
US soldiers are in top physical shape compared to the French, and it appears much better in infantry tactics. The soldier notes:
Heavily built, fed at the earliest age with Gatorade, proteins, and creatine they are all heads and shoulders taller than us and their muscles remind us of Rambo. Our frames are amusingly skinny to them we are wimps, even the strongest of us and because of that they often mistake us [the French] for Afghans. [snip] Even if some of them are a bit on the heavy side, all of them provide us everyday with lessons in infantry know-how. Beyond the wearing of a combat kit that never seems to discomfort them (helmet strap, helmet, combat goggles, rifles etc.) the long hours of watch at the outpost never seem to annoy them in the slightest.

Pretty amazing. I hope the guy who wrote that doesn’t get in trouble.
May God bless our soldiers.
Yeah, that was my thought as well.
Brave to the core.
so no WW2 jokes from our guys about Hitler in Paris?
Effin A!
I remember reading that during the second WW, Europeans were aghast at the appearance of Americans.
I’m pretty sure it’s a nutrition thing. Americans were/are heavier built, stronger and more developed... AND taller
There is a window of development for that stuff and if nutrition is poor during formative years... you can’t ‘catch up’ later.
One European said ‘We couldn’t believe how tall and big all of them were...’
There was an FR article back in 2004 about a Spanish journalist who was embedded with our troops for 10 days, and he had some anti-US leanings due to the Iraq War. After they protected him so many times, he became pro-US as the soldiers in that company became his best friends even after the war..
For whatever that's worth ...
Thank you young man. God bless you and may you be safe and happy.
I seem to remember this from years ago!
Obama tried to take that quick response away from our military with a buffer of lawyers. As an aside, after my military service I spent 45 years in engineering. We worked with companies from many countries. What made us more effective was the ability to make decisions individually while they would have to form a committee to make the decision. It would sometimes take weeks. If we were individually wrong, it usually didn’t take weeks to correct the problem.
When VietNam fell, my church adopted a SVN refugee couple with a small son and daughter. All 4 accepted Christ and learned English. Those kids became instant Americans. And how they grew and filled out. The boy became a husky 6 footer, Bible college grad teaching school. The girl blossomed into a gorgeous woman, with Hooters never ever seen on a native in Saigon. I can only credit the Lord and American groceries with how those kids turned out.
I have no problem with the Vietnamese that came here. The vast majority are an asset to this country.
The Belgian Air Assault Regiment has had the reputation since the ‘60’s as being one of the most capable SF outfits in the World. They learned a lot of hard lessons in the Congo jungle...
Yes and I believe I have read that there is no evidence its real! Meaning that it comes from a French soldier!
Guys — it’s not just the American diet of hamburgers and milkshakes.
Several times a month I play back in my head the magnificent tribute by a Marine general to two Marines who sacrificed their lives while preventing a terrorist from blowing up a barracks and killing several hundred Marines and Iraqi soldiers working with them. I know most people on this board are familiar with General Kelly’s speech, but I think about it a lot and it’s worth repeating:
The recording shows the truck careening to a stop immediately in front of the two Marines. In all of the instantaneous violence Yale and Haerter never hesitated. By all reports and by the recording, they never stepped back. They never even started to step aside. They never even shifted their weight. With their feet spread shoulder width apart, they leaned into the danger, firing as fast as they could work their weapons. They had only one second left to live.
The truck explodes. The camera goes blank. Two young men go to their God.
“They never even shifted their weight.” This is what the French soldier was talking about.
