They wanted to make the statue more inclusive by having a woman and a black fighter doing it, in spite of the inconvenient fact that the flag was raised by four white male firemen.

And how not? Does the 'fire service' not fight fires? In what ways does Fireman Sam not embody what the 'firefighting service' does?

Is your workforce not majority male anyway? Can the females you do have, actually carry the firehose and properly utilize it? Can they complete normal fireman tasks, such as chopping a door down within a reasonable timeframe? Can they buddy carry an unconscious fire victim several hundred feet, down levels of stairs, while wearing crazy heavy firefighting uniforms? Can they volunteer at a CAC fundraiser, and take off their shirts to display an impressive sixpack for all the crazy screaming ladies playing fundraiser bingo/raffles?
