Artist David Hockney leaves Los Angeles to live in France because he can 'smoke in restaurants [tr]

Famed British artist David Hockney is giving up Los Angeles after 55 years for Normandy, France, to live out the rest of his days. 'I can do twice as much work there, three times as much,' Hockney tells the Wall Street Journal of leaving the city that made him famous in the 1960s. 'I've probably not much time left and because I don't, I value it even more.' It's there in his new home, which he bought on a whim last year after seeing it for just 25 minutes, that the 82-year-old created his latest work inspired by the view from his Normandy house to be showcased this fall in Manhattan. 'I'd like to just work and paint,' he says. 'And to be able to smoke and eat in a restaurant at the same time. Thank God for Normandy. The French know how to live. They know about pleasure.'

I abhor smoke nazis.

I don’t know if I’d go that far, but they sure don’t understand freedom. They almost killed the prosperity of the city of Deadwood after the SD Legislature passed a bill killing smoking in restaurants and Casinos. Probably also included businesses in general but the Casino end of things really hurt. Took a couple of years before things returned to the previous normal.

Interesting in the fact the Legislature ended up hurting the State’s bottom line because of their decision.

If it’s as bad as you say it is, then there would be no one alive today born before 1974.

Yes smoke is bad but how bad?

What about any toxins coming out of your tailpipe? With your rationale I should be able to exclude vehicles from driving near my home due to the public health concern.

Smoking can be fatal to smokers. To non smokers it’s an annoyance.

I should have expanded slightly on the freedom issue. Perhaps in this vein: they did not understand the freedom a business owner should have to determine for himself or herself who their customer base should include.

“...it left a lasting impression on how deeply Fascism has seeped into our country.”

Just wait until Red Flag laws allow any geek on the street to denounce you to the po-po for owning a gun. THAT’S fascism!

Well you wouldn’t channel tailpipe exhaust directly into the confined space of your home, you would die. You can say cigarette ‘exhaust’ isn’t as bad as that. That doesn’t mean the toxin level is zero. In children it could contribute to asthma. And it makes you stink, did I mention that?

I see a lot of “Conservatives” on this site who seem to think that is their role.

That would tend to place them the in Conservative in name only box.

The poster simply stated a desire that all smokers leave. There was no mention of exile, which would be something forced on them.

Very disingenuous on your part. The original article was about someone leaving the country and the poster desired that all other smokers go with him. What do you think would happen if someone who "wished" that upon others would do if they actually had the power to do it?

If you made it to 82, in reasonably good health, the rest is gravy.

Death in that case comes from carbon monoxide. If you pipe in that much cig smoke you’d still live. CO can kill you in a couple minutes.

Any particulate can aggravate asthma. BBQ and fireplace smoke just as triggering. Good luck banning dust. So if someone is allergic to peanuts, we have to ban peanuts?

No, as much as folks tout the climate style “science” of the dangers of second hand smoke, all it comes down to is in your last line - they just don’t like the smell.

They have signs up in restaurants and no one obeys them. The French have a nice anti-government side to their nature - just check out those yellow jacket folks.

In April I spent a few days in Paris and was impressed how the posted signs are more suggestions than law. Everyone pretty much does as they please, within reason.

And it seems traffic laws do not exist at all.

And Spain

I live in Spain. You aren't allowed to smoke inside of restaurants but they all have tables outside where you can smoke to your heart's content. If someone doesn't like it the owner will ask them to leave before they ask the smoker to put out their cigarette.

It used to ne called Marlboro country.
Now it’s called Indonesia.
Smoker’s Paradise.
Second, if second hand smoke kills, why aren’t all the air stwardesses of the 60’s and 70’s dead?
I’m not proud to be a smoker,nor
am I ashamed.

As usual I didn’t clarify my post

I was referring to how feminism hasn’t reached the wokeness in the romance or Latin nations of Europe like here

I’m guessing many east bloc countries are less fembot too

I can’t imagine Poland or Latvia or Hungary or Bulgaria as fembot

I could be wrong about that

I’m glad to hear Spain still allows at least outdoor smoking unimpeded

Some places in America you can’t even smoke outside anywhere in the municipality

Do people vape in Spain

I haven’t been since 1990

I had ships business in Bilbao......the women....I remember that part

Spain...you could do worse

“Given how wealthy he is, why didn’t he buy a couple restaurants and make them allow smoking?”

Because the filthy anti-smoking nazi filthy government doesn’t allow people to decide for themselves.
