Artist David Hockney leaves Los Angeles to live in France because he can 'smoke in restaurants [tr]

Famed British artist David Hockney is giving up Los Angeles after 55 years for Normandy, France, to live out the rest of his days. 'I can do twice as much work there, three times as much,' Hockney tells the Wall Street Journal of leaving the city that made him famous in the 1960s. 'I've probably not much time left and because I don't, I value it even more.' It's there in his new home, which he bought on a whim last year after seeing it for just 25 minutes, that the 82-year-old created his latest work inspired by the view from his Normandy house to be showcased this fall in Manhattan. 'I'd like to just work and paint,' he says. 'And to be able to smoke and eat in a restaurant at the same time. Thank God for Normandy. The French know how to live. They know about pleasure.'

As an Angeleno I vouch for cigarettes being illegal in numerous places, but marijuana smoke PERMEATING EVERYWHERE —which I find far more offensive.

After reading these comments it’s amazing how smokers have become the easy target for social ostracism. I was in Calabasas,Mexifornia TEN years ago at a motel and another guest called the Sheriffs on me for smoking a cigar in my TRUCK! They gave me a warning but it left a lasting impression on how deeply Fascism has seeped into our country. I get a kick out of people becoming self righteous and getting upset when I blow a giant cloud of cigar smoke out my window. But on the other side I’ve had compliments and even a female cop said she liked the smell. Go figure. So there is hope out there. Now remember kiddies...tobacco bad, marijuana good.

***I abhor smoke Nazis***

Tobacco is commerce: agriculture, manufacturing, taxes. etc. If smoking was illegal (like marijuana ) the economy would suffer from second hand stupidity.

Once worked with a young female physician who smoked!!!!

Funny that. We feel exactly the same way about you.

I wish the rest of the smokers would leave too.

I quit smoking years ago but vowed I'd never become a non-smoking nazi.

Your desire is not our command and that is damned liberal of you.

Back in the middle of the last century, the market was filled with Doctors endorsing cigarettes...

9 out of 10 Doctors prefer Camels, was a biggie.
The WAGS added:
the other one likes women. <: <: <:

It wasn’t all that long ago that the GOVERNMENT imposed a ‘massive’ tax on tobacco that was touted as being a tool that would pay for EVERYONES health care.

Rush used to ‘remind’ all to thank that group of ostracized smokers huddled in groups outside office doors as THEY were paying for OUR health care.

Someone asked the ‘foolish’ question ...WHAT happens when people stop buying cigarettes and tobacco?

After the dumb looks stopped they agreed the plan wasn’t all that good BUT kept all the money etc etc etc.

Thanks for your open-minded attitude toward my little vice — unlike some of the people here on FR, who sound just like Leftists any time tobacco is mentioned.

I recently have been under medical care for a condition I won’t bore you with other than to say that I’m expected to make a complete recovery in about a month. I’ve even lost 25 pounds or so.

They worked me up pretty good, with the chest ultrasound, stress test and all. And you know what — my heart and lungs are sound for a man of 61 years.

Naturally, when they asked me if I smoked, I replied — “occasional cigar or pipe, never cigarettes.”

My conclusion has always been that cigars or pipes in moderation are an acceptable risk. Just puff, don’t inhale. Cigarettes — well, you’re just plain using tobacco the wrong way. Not that I hate cigarette smokers.

Back in happier days, it was sort of accepted that old men smoked pipes. Look at those black-and-white pictures.

Now they are saying red hats cause anxiety.
= = = = = = = = = = = =

Now I know why I have/had a closet full of RED HATS which I ordered when I got all my Custom made military hats in RED as well as my standard Navy Blue.

I have taken to wearing my RED Vets hats to see if I can stir some MORE hate & discontent as that is basically what the original Vietnam hats were supposed to do..to keep reminding all the people with ‘short memories’ from the 60s....

I may even get lucky and have some fool try and REMOVE MY COVER because it is red....

Surprise! Surprise!

I don’t mind being called a nazi by those who pimp death and addiction.

Interesting explanation about France...

I still it was a risky move on his part--the anti-smoking crazies have gone into over-drive and it is hard to believe that French restaurants can ignore them indefinitely...

I smoke cigars and it is amazing with the bizarre international rules and taxes on cigars.

Example:

Australia's new taxes (just enacted) are something like $100 a cigar (a little complicated but basically that is it).

Spain is the exact opposite--they regulate the _maximum_ price of cigars (to a reasonably low number) which means that you can walk into stores there and get vintage Cubans for dirt cheap prices compared to the rest of the world.

Smoking IS French culture. What that book “Why French Women Are Thin” left out is that they all smoke! I once saw Catherine Deneuve puffing away on a Paris street corner. They’ll never reform the French on this.

I like the smell of pipe smoke. People need small vices. Without them, they go directly to mass murder.

We go to some really nice cigar bars here where the ladies sip single-malt scotch while the guys light up and play dominoes. I allow smoking in my home.

Living in exile in France because America is the land of Kardashians and the Caliban who seek to ban everything from cigarettes to light bulbs, gasoline powered cars, air conditioning, etc to even toilet paper rationing (just use one square).

An artist cannot get recognized in that culture.

I stopped smoking 20 years ago, but threads like this one make me sad. Conservatives should not be so against a personal choice like smoking. Why believe the media's lies about second hand smoke? It's a myth.

I maintain the country was a better place back when more people smoked. My comment isn't about smoking. My comment is about the Nanny attitude that now permeates our culture and the idea that strangers should be in charge of all of your personal decisions. I see a lot of "Conservatives" on this site who seem to think that is their role.
