(Meredith) - As Hurricane Dorian approaches the east coast of Florida, one woman is taking extreme measures to protect her home.
Brittany Vidal, of St. Augustine, wrapped her house in plastic and secured the barrier with duct tape and nearly 300 sandbags.
She considered elevating her house after it flooded during Hurricane Matthew and Irma. For now, she's relying on plastic wrap.
"Hopefully our barricade will do something for us this year," Vidal told WFOX-TV.
Vidal lives in the Davis Shores neighborhood, which is part of evacuation Zone A.
Zones A and B are comprised of nearly 149,000 people who were asked to evacuate ahead of the storm. Vidal said she plans to stay put for the time being.
Hurricane Dorian, now a Category 3, has been battering the Bahamas, causing extensive damage and flooding.
The National Hurricane center said Dorian is expected to move "dangerously close" to the Florida east coast late Tuesday through Wednesday evening and then move north to coastal Georgia and South Carolina on Wednesday night and Thursday.

I was expecting it to look like one of those plastic-wrapped suitcases at the airport.
Probably equally effective.
LOL!...(check)
Red Green would approve.
The problem is that what she did would have done nothing.
Even without significant wind, water will breach at least one seam in the plastic and water on both sides of the plastic would reach the same level.
Duct tape? She obviously hasn’t seen what water does to duct tape.
Yes I saw the sandbags, but the tape will come off when the wind blows and the moisture starts getting to it. So they will have protection from the sandbags but only a few extra inches from the plastic. But yes it may end up being just enough to keep out water if the water does not rise too much. I hope we get the follow up story, and for their sake I hope it is a happy story as well. Living in Louisiana I know what she is going through. Fortunately I do not live too near water and I am in the mountains (read that as at a higher elevation - as there are no mountains here) 8>) of Louisiana.
She had the right idea but it was not well executed.
She should have skipped the fragile plastic and spent all the money on duct tape.
The plastic wrap may actually work, if applied correctly. But it won’t help against flooding.
I remember a couple of decades ago seeing images of farm land that was flooded by the Mississippi river overflowing. In it there was this huge shallow lake, and this one house surrounded by about a half acre of dry land around it. The owner had raised the level of the land before he built the house. It had not flooded.
This seems like a no brainer to me. If you are going to build in a flood plain, simply pay the extra money to bring in some dirt to raise up the places you plan on building to a level at least a foot higher than the highest ever flood and you should be pretty golden with that. It should affect your insurance rate as well.
I honestly don’t know why more people don’t do that.
LOL I grew up in Louisiana, I was about to ask about the mountains.
I was near Alexandria, so we got severe thunderstorms and tornadoes from Hurricanes but nothing like the coast.

I would like to see an 'after crisis' photo of the residence
to see if her tape, sandbag and plastic project was successful.
Incidentally, it looks like she used electrical tape
rather than 100 mph 'duck tape'.
Prepping immediately before, or during a crisis generally leads to stupidity and folly.
Americans have lost any shame in being obese
That and no daddies in the white community now and more bossy than ever wives are maybe three biggest cultural markers Ive seen happen in my 61 years
People are it seems 20-30 pounds heavier on average now ...and thats being kind
Please tell me she and those who think like her are not allowed to vote.
This past spring, we spent a month and a half on “the hard” in a boat yard in St. Augustine, then 2 weeks on a mooring ball in the river.
Many of the folks that face the river near the Bridge are raising their houses up on stilts. Apparently, the sea wall isn’t high enough.
Beautiful town all the same. Hope to get back down there soon.
Silly her. She should have just use Flex Seal. Hasn’t she seen the commercials?
Peach
All that is missing is his tin hat.
Then again, if he had one on one wouldn’t be able to ‘spot it’.
She looks better prepared than her neighbors.
I would like to see the after pictures as well.
