A searing adaptation of one of most controversial books about the Holocaust divided critics at the Venice film festival Wednesday, with some fighting each other in the dark to get out of its first screening.

The Painted Bird based on Jerzy Kosinski's highly contentious 1965 novel about a Jewish boy surviving the worst human nature can inflict on him in an unnamed Eastern European country, was hailed as a masterpiece by some and an unwatchable ordeal by others.

But its staggering central performance from nine-year-old Czech Roma boy Petr Kotlar - who witnesses a panoply of depravity from incest, bestiality and rape to mutilation and murder - has had co-stars Harvey Keitel and Stellan Skarsgard as well as the critics in raptures.

I read this book in my early 20s. I remember cringing at many of the scenes but marveling at the quality of the writing and the story.

He said the film was a warning of what can happen when Europe turns inward as it was doing now, drawing a parallel between the attitudes to migrant children fleeing wars in Syria, Libya and Afghanistan and the rejection and abuse his hero suffers.

'Bad times are coming to Europe,' he told reporters.

'Looking at the populists who are running so many European countries at the moment like Hungary, Poland, Russia, in the Czech Republic too and of course the US.'

I think they are selling this as propaganda, encouraging Europe to "do the right thing" and drift into being more Pro-Muslim. You know: like Hitler was.

Almost certainly a fabrication. He might claim they did, but there are an endless number of unverifiable claims made about the holocaust for the purposes of cashing in. Case in point, Bernard Holstein, aka Bernard Brougham, who claimed wolves rescued him and that Nazis killed people using masturbation machines. He was exposed as a hoax sometime ago.

This does not sound even remotely "entertaining". Sounds like an endurance test like Pasolini's Salo with no redeeming features.

I read one book by Kosinski decades ago called Cockpit. Even though it was fiction, the main character/narrator was a dark and ruthless character.

If one is going to make a film about the Holocaust, Cambodian Death Camps or Slavery, those films should be as accurate and realistic as possible.

Depends on the Woody Allen movie. Two of is early ones, “Grab the Money and Run” and “Sleeper” were screamingly funny. Then he tried to get “serious” and started producing garbage.

imho the holocaust industry is slowly destroying western civilization.

An easy way to show this is that the democrat party has been home to jews to a hundred years. Now it is becoming anti Semitic. Why? Because the democrat party was home to holocaust morality which burns out non jews.

By way of understanding —Christianity is based on Jesus and not masada. Why Jesus and not Masada? Because Jesus rose from the dead. The Masada dead remained dead.

The Masada dead did not just stay dead but the became a curse on Rome.

Similarly the holocaust dead have become a curse on Germany. Consider the Germans today. They have been made to bear the curse of the Holocaust whereas the Russians who killed more and whose secret police were heavy with Jews—bears no burden at all for their atrocities.

What is the result? The Germans have gone the same way as the democrats. They can’t bear being German. They import moslems who only want to rape and despoil them.

This is beautiful to holocaust jews. But is a broken germany or a broken democrat party really in the interest of Israel or diaspora jews?
