But to be “grateful”?

Well leave it to MSNBC to sensationalize what she said in their headline.
“She doesnt have to live like a refugee.”
Why would you think she is? She isn’t! She’s making the best of a bad thing she had no control over.
She doesn’t live like a refugee. She has mentally triumphed over her ordeal, and in so doing, she has conquered and to some extent eliminated it.
When I learned that my abuser had died, I felt sad for his family. Some days later, in a retrospective moment, I privately congratulated myself for having moved so far beyond petty anger.
I just didn’t really care anymore, and saw things for what they were.
Combat OIF: check.
Abuse as a child: check.
“Insanity Moments” check.
Doing bad, bad things way back when: check.
Dollars spent on psychiatrists: $0.
Smiles, cuddling, love-making, raising a family, lifting charities, helping to elect Republicans...
