I think the key point is that they were”inside the garage”. That is a break-in.

I tend to agree but would need to know more. Was he in the garage when they came in and was trapped? Short of that type of situation, why wouldn’t you just call the cops? I carry and have zero desire to actually shoot someone. Wouldn’t do it over money, I’d hand my wallet over rather than have that on my mind for the rest of my life. Now, and I understand that this is difficult for anyone not in the situation to assess, if I felt threatened or felt my family was threatened...well, that’s why I carry. And close calls of the interpretation of that risk favors the person who felt at risk. I am pretty sure that’s how the courts will look at it. If you clearly are not at risk, you don’t have the right to shoot.
The are private property issues here too. Since when did all property become public community property?
My garage is part of my house. If someone is in my garage, they are in my house. Detached garage, different story.

However, if he went out to the garage to investigate noises, and was confronted and feared for his life, that would be relevant.
This guy needs a good lawyer and must be very careful about what he says.

These stories never seem to have the details necessary for reasonable people to make a judgment. The gaps in the story leave wide paths for the agenda people to exploit the situation. Nevertheless it is always a tragedy when someone even if justified has to take human life and live with it. That homeowner will be praised if these two were a threat to himself and his family but regardless he will have some sleepless nights. Ask any combat veteran who had to do the right thing.
