Jessi Combs, race car driver and TV host, dies in jet-car crash at age 39
fox news ^ | 08/28/2019

Combs had previously set the women’s land-speed world record for four-wheeled vehicles in 2013, driving the North American Eagle. She made the record-breaking run in the Alvord Desert in Oregon. She reportedly had an average speed of 398 mph.

The previous record was 308 mph, which was set in 1965.

Combs reportedly hoped to one day set the overall women’s land-speed record, which would require her to break speeds of 512 mph.

In a statement obtained by Autoblog, her family said, “It is with extreme grief, and in celebration of her life that her family and close friends share that race car driver, and TV personality Jessi Combs, passed away in a fatal crash, where she was pursuing a land speed record in the North American Eagle on August, 27th 2019 on a dry lake bed in Oregon."

The details of the crash have not been released at this time.

I always liked her on ‘Overhaulin’ and her other shows. She wasn’t just a pretty face, she drove and could work with the tools. RIP.

Not familiar with her but I for some reason thought of Payne Stewart, then noticed the word, “car”.

Some people have a sparkle. It is genuine and makes others glow from the happiness they spread when ever around.

Sorry to hear she has passed.

Why is there a “women’s” land speed record? Why should this “sport” be gendered? Men have on average a big enough advantage in size, speed, strength and endurance that most sports are gendered, but I don’t see why that would apply to driving in a straight line while a monster engine (or are those cars rocket powered?) does all the work.

Good point. I always wondered why the motor sports didn’t employ more slender women and or very small people like dwarves, at least in competitions where you wouldn’t want more weight for traction and where fuel consumption isn’t a strategic factor. It’s probably due to a small % being put in a position to be around the sport at an early age?

Shirley Muldowney did exactly that in top fuel drag racing. Without a doubt one of the all time best.
