The Dead Don’t Die in Elmore County

Elmore County, Idaho is a beautiful place where the Snake River flows and host of the Mountain Home Air Force Base. It’s a peaceful place where one can live and, hopefully, die in peace.

In the early summer of 2019, Elmore County’s coroner Jerry Rost decided he wanted to retire. He had trained his assistant and deputy coroner of 13 years, Nickie Campbell to replace him. Elmore, like many Idaho counties, elects its coroner during regular election cycles. Rost’s retirement outside an election cycle meant that the Elmore County Republican Central Committee (ECRCC) needed to submit 3 names for consideration to the county commissioners to pick his successor. Rost, a Republican, had recommended Campbell to succeed him and she would go on to work as the director at his funeral home.

My dad and my uncles grew up in Glenns Ferry. Don’t know if any were a part of the Elmore County Benevolent Society, and alas they are all but one are gone so I can’t ask. Spent wonderful summers in GF. Quite a contrast to SoCal where I grew up.

I remember you could only buy wine and spirits at the state liquor store and you had to have a ‘license’. Grandpa would somehow finagle one from a friend (he worked for Union Pacific) to get wine for Christmas.

I hear on that. I’m always here. The wife is always “Are you on that computer again!?!’’. I procrastinate at everything because of it. I was going to join a self- help group for that but I kept putting it off.

Yeah, right? Besides, I’m sure they can’t just be ‘’merely dead’’ but I’m sure they have to be ‘’really most sincerely dead’’.

Jim's been posting his complaints of how much of your junk mail he's been getting.

I'm surprised he didn't ping you.
