Has the reach of #MeToo finally come for Renoir? ... The piece, titled "Renoir's Problem Nudes" has doozies like these: Who doesnt have a problem with Pierre-Auguste Renoir? A tremendously engaging show that centers on the painters prodigious output of female nudes, Renoir: The Body, the Senses, at the Clark Art Institute, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, sparks a sense of crisis. The reputation of the once exalted, still unshakably canonical, Impressionist has fallen on difficult days. Never mind the affront to latter-day educated tastes of a painting style so sugary that it imperils your minds incisors; theres a more burning issue. The art historian Martha Lucy, writing in the shows gorgeous catalogue, notes that, in contemporary discourse, the name Renoir has come to stand for sexist male artist. Renoir took such presumptuous, slavering joy in looking at naked womenwho in his paintings were always creamy or biscuit white, often with strawberry accents, and ideally blondthat, Lucy goes on to argue, the tactility of the later nudes, with brushstrokes like roving fingers, unsettles any kind of gaze, including the male. Ill endorse that, for what its worth. ... (Whisper: Wait till this guy hears about Caravaggio.)

Was he the guy that liked fat bottomed girls?...............
One of them. You might be thinking of Rubens. He was famous for it.
Mapplethorpe was a sexist homosexual artist. Why the double standard on whom is okay today,
He was French, what do you expect?
Especially ones with red hair.
Shouldn't the New Yorker be going after the Victorian portrait artists that let their subjects include a little negro child in the painting?
Pres. Trump needs to tweet out his love of rap music. Then maybe it’ll be done away with once and for all. Ditto those wretched Kars 4 Kids and “male enhancement” ads.
Wonder what the Rap Coalition Of America position would be?
A former phb-ette was an art model?
I’m turned off art.
More to the point, in contemporary discourse, the term "Progressive" has come to stand for hypocritical historical revisionist.
Congressional black caucus ?
They make the rocking world go round :)
Beverly Hills Cop.
Good point. I suppose it has to do with whether you’re embarrassed when you see the image. I was raised on academic nudes from babyhood, so they never embarrass me. Mapplethorpe has some sexual images which, I admit, do.
>>Pres. Trump needs to tweet out his love of rap music.
OOOHHHH! YES!!!!!!! Nothing like a car on the street with the window down and the bass breaking into your bones.
>>”Progressive” has come to stand for hypocritical historical revisionist.
SO PERFECT!
I have to admit that I’m more aware of those creatures looking at art that includes cherubs and babes in arms. When I was making the video with Mary Cassatt paintings, I didn’t use the ones with front-on nudity of babies because I couldn’t bear to think I was pleasing any of the creeps.
