Over two decades, they managed to dig more than 7.5 miles down into the Earth.
However, in 1992 they had to stop drilling because the temperature was around 180 degrees Celsius, which was far hotter than the scientists predicted it would be.
If you fell down the hole, it would take around 3.5 to 4 minutes to reach the bottom.

Is this anything like Project Mohole back in the 1960s?
This is Mohole’s big brother.
Great song BTW. I read about the meaning of every line and it references more things than an encyclopedia.
Brilliant song.
This might be deeper than Mel’s Hole.
Did they reach China?
Also, since EVERY deep hole in this hemisphere was supposedly deep enough to reach China, when the Chinese dig a hole what is the comparative destination?
What do you call a Chinese restaurant in China?
At the bottom they discovered socks. Single, unpaired socks. Some of them are mine.
Reversal of the Law of Parity???
No way!!
A young engineer I’d worked with often came in with mismatched socks!
But one day he came in smiling!
He threw away all his existing socks and purchased a dozen white pairs and a dozen black pairs.
TRUE!!!

Antipode of Chicago, Illinois, United States
The opposite side of the world to Chicago is Port-aux-Français, Kerguelen, French Southern Territories.
And it goes both ways.
Not in England:
Presently she began again. "I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth! How funny it'll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downwards!...
... "but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country is, you know. Please, Ma'am, is this New Zealand or Australia?"
This is where all of the "Great Society" money goes.
We already have geothermal wells a lot shallower that are producing energy, but I’d guess we could always use more.
Lewis Carroll took the time to look at a globe!!!

...But even if you managed to make a tube that allowed you to pass through the magma, sucked all the air out of the tube, and wore a spacesuit so that you could breath, there would still be problems. Namely, the rotation of the planet. In short, about halfway to the center of the Earth you would be moving sideways about 1,500 mph (2400 kmh) faster than the walls of your tube. This fact is obviously terribly bad for your long-term health. You would bounce and bang and careen off the sides of the tube and, well, die.
But putting all of these issue aside (and several others that Ive failed to mention), if you could jump through the Earth, your momentum would keep you traveling through to the other side. And how many minuets would this take?
42. And that, as we all know, is the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

Does pumping heat from deep in the earth add to global warming???
Might not be clean and green!
You can work a geothermal well to death!
Extract too much heat and the recovery period is, like forever.
Mole men. Better get Clark.
