Doctors Remove Venomous Brown Recluse Spider From Missouri Woman’s Ear

Doctors in Kansas City, Missouri, pulled a venomous brown recluse spider out of Torres' ear, and somehow, she kept her cool.

But she's never sleeping without earplugs again. She woke up Wednesday morning with popping and swishing sounds in her ear. She decided to check it out after work, though she didn't think much of it at first, she said.

A medical assistant examined Torres' ear, then ran out of the room to grab more sets of eyes. Soon, two nurses, three medical students and a doctor joined the assistant in the tiny exam room to break the news--a spider had set up shop in her ear canal.

Remarkably, she stayed calm, even with the knowledge that a skittering spider was squatting in her head, she said.

"Seeing the instruments they were going to put in my ear started to make me panic," she said.

The doctor flushed her ear with water, but it didn't budge.

After a few more tries, the doctor pulled it out in one piece and laid it out, legs flayed. They determined the invader to be a brown recluse spider, a nocturnal spider that can inject victims with a venomous fluid if it bites, she said.

"The nurses said it was dead, but they might've just said that so I wouldn't freak out," she said.

In some sort of miracle, the team informed her the arachnid skated down her ear canal without so much as a bite, she said.

She thinks it might have entered her ear while she was sleeping, so now she doesn't take any chances. She bought ear plugs shortly after her ordeal ended.

"I just didn't think it was possible for them to come inside the ear," she said. "Who would've thought?"

I was bitten when we lived in SoCal. There were veil like webs in our garage. I think I brought one in with the laundry. It set up housekeeping behind the toilet tank in our bathroom. We had an exterminator come out and spray the garage and all around the house. My husband killed the one in the bathroom

I think Allegra (no longer posting) used a Beretta to dispatch a huge (hugh) camel spider in her quarters in Iraq during one of her early tours there.

Had the flying insect that causes blue tongue in deer land on my ear and walk right in. That’s exactly what they do to deer. We used olive oil to drown it. Then in the emergency room the doctor reached in with a tool to remove it.

The other doctor was saying he couldn’t have dealt with it and would have wanted to “shoot it out.” Jerk.

I think that brown recluse could have killed her with a bite inside the head

Great. Why didn't they just sell tickets?

My brother went to the emergency room for a minor injury. The person in the next bay had stepped on a catfish and had a barb in his foot. The problem was that no one cut the barb loose so just about every doctor in the hospital came to "consult" on the guy with a fish stuck to his foot. If he only had a barb no one would have cated.

I was in bed on a houseboat in Lake of the Ozarks when I realized something ran across my face and instinctively I jumped up and started screaming. It was a cockroach which my friend then killed with her shoe. Somehow I slept after all that.

I don’t understand why anyone would voluntarily live south of Connecticut or west of the Hudson river.

To avoid being around liberals, of course.

Lake of the Ozarks

It appears Missouri insects/arachnids are pretty forward with humans, taking refuge in ears, running across faces. I used to tell people the the Missouri state bird is the tick, although chiggers were in the running.

A guy that I work with has a son who is an ER doctor. They live for this kind of weird stuff. It’s like a resume-enhancer!

Check the map. They almost totally miss Florida. Just the very Western edge near the Al. line.

I did. That is why I posted.Just before I moved to Alabama, a Hillsborough County Agriculture Magazine stated that a colony of Recluses had been discovered in Thonotoassa. But before that I talked to people who said they were bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider. Their wounds were ugly and nasty, even after being treated by a doctor for a while. I had killed several in the back yard. They were quick.
