Jordan Peterson: The Deep Fake artists must be stopped before we no longer know what's real
nationalpost.com ^ | August 23, 2019 | Jordan Peterson

Something very strange and disturbing happened to me recently. If it was just relevant to me, it wouldn’t be that important (except perhaps to me), and I wouldn’t be writing this column. But it’s something that is likely more important and more ominous than we can even imagine.

There are already common fraudulent schemes being perpetrated by both telephone and internet. One known as the “Grandparent Scam” is particularly reprehensible, first because it is perpetrated on elderly people who are, in general, more susceptible to tech-savvy criminals and second because it is based on the manipulation of familial love, trust and compassion. The criminal running the Grandparent Scam calls, or emails the victim, pretending to represent a grandchild who is now in trouble with the law or who needs money for a hospital bill for an injury that can’t be discussed, say, with parents, because of the moral trouble that might ensue. They generally call late at night — say at four in the morning — because that adds to the confusion. The preferred mechanism of money movement is wire transfer — and that’s a warning: don’t transfer money by wire without knowing for certain who is receiving it, because once it’s gone, it’s not coming back.

Now what if it was possible to conduct such a scam using the actual voice of the hypothetical victim? Worse, what if it was possible to do so with voice and video image, indistinguishable from the real thing? If we’re not at that point now (and we probably are) we will be within months.

In April of this year, a company called Coding Elite exposed an artificial intelligence (AI) program that took a substantial sample of my voice, which is easily accessible on the YouTube lectures and podcasts that I have posted over the last years.

The genie is out of the bottle.

It won't be long before a deep fake video surfaces which inflames a lynch mob and someones' reputation is destroyed or worse.

Also, deep fake videos are going to be cited to discount legitimate investigations and throw them into chaos.

Unless you see it live and in person every video can be called into question.

For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. -— Matthew 24:24. I have, for a while now, assumed this is how this Scripture was going to be accomplished. FRiends, know your Bible, front to back, and know the LORD Jesus, as well!

Given what I’ve heard of Peterson in the past, I don’t think he could be more sincere.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes. I have heard that from others in response to my post as well so I (likely) stand corrected. But my opinion of the article remains - it seems odd to me. I think you are correct in that we don’t know if he wrote it. Or perhaps, it’s as another posted on this thread, he’s smart in other realms? So perhaps he’s shrieking to sound the alarm and awaken the sleepers.
Something better than just slight redesigns of the same thing. Actual foldable displays, color eink readers bigger than a paperback. Useful robots. VR that isnt either overpriced or poorly implemented.
Things that work without needing accounts and internet connections to Skynet would be great too.
I was once hoping to be the next big tech guy. I have ideas, but that world is looking to be more evil and susceptible to things I dont think I want to be part of.
I’ll toss ideas out on forums. Maybe someone better than I can run with it.
There was a time when we saw computers increase their power by the month. Screens go from boxes to flat, the ability to store entire music libraries on ever smaller devices. Cameras that went from film to digital and then improve their resolution every year. Bulky laptops to netbooks, to tablets to thinner tablets that convert to laptops. Bigger TVs with insane resolution. This was literally 1999-2012.
Now it kind of all just what new gimmick can we add to last year’s model and sell it for the same. Right now the only news I see is the Galaxy S10. Just last year’s phone with who cares spec bumps and Google not using food names for android phones in the future.
Until last week, I had thought that the tech was years away.
Now it is going to pair with social media and make things 1000x worse very soon.
And there is no law that will stop it.
The technology genie out of his bottle is why criminals and terrorists will always have guns. (The left knows that; it is about disarming the law-abiding majority.)
I’ve no doubt the real Jordan Peterson would sue anyone who wrote an article, pretending to be him. There are already laws that cover that. There ARE no laws that cover the fake videos, though, and there should be. The potential for misuse and damage is, arguably, limitless.
Yes. And the reverse is equally true - but you will not convince Google and Facebook of that.
My escape is to enter a Christian sanctuary where ancient hymns are sung with those around me, and we hear a sermon. One man speaking for 10 or 15 or 20 minutes without interruption. Not just any man, but a man whose life is dedicated to studying the Sacred Scriptures and who has been called to speak and to preach in that particular sanctuary, with souls under his care. We kneel. We bow. No way to deep fake it. I am convinced the “fulness of time” referenced bt St. Paul was intentionally bereft of audio and video recording.
Interesting - thanks...
A couple of things I’ve occasionally thought would be wonderful would be a large roll-up display that you could stick to your wall like wallpaper. I know the concept’s been around. A friend showed me some oled on paper back in the 90’s. It appears to have not really gone anywhere since.
Likewise, I’m with you on the VR. I got some FPV goggles and a mini-drone, it’s fun to play with, but they’re uncomfortable, and the display resolution is less than ideal.
Being someone who has poor eyesight, 4K that I could wear, or heck, even 1080p would be a wonder.
But I’m not in a position to make anything like that happen. I’m just a guy who does ... stuff. Yeah, that’s it.
Just do a search on YouTube for “Deep Fake” and you’ll find a bunch of videos. Some are very convincing.
This is a real threat and Jordan Peterson is right to raise an alert.
I think we’ll need something like public/private key encryption to validate or “stamp” video or audio so the world can know that the source of the content is real.
I suspect (hope) the technical world is way ahead of me on this.
That’s not a way to pull people to your side. It only makes people more unstable when they are told “listen to my honest lips, not your lying eyes” .
This is a very real threat. I don’t think it’s fully developed yet, but it’s getting closer.
Quoting Peterson, "More to the point: how are we going to trust anything electronically mediated in the very near future ...
With children and grandchildren give them a secret word... If they don't give the word it's a scam... or do the World War II thing - ask for something that's common knowledge (within your family) - wrong answer and it's a scam.
Yes, instill doubt in the methods that common sense would otherwise rely on.
But don’t underestimate the human ability to adapt and see through the BS. We may be morons, but we’ll never lack the capacity of understanding — our downfall will be voluntary ignorance, negligence.
Did anyone out there get the scare phone call from the "Social Security" telling you there is illegal crap being done with your S.S.#? These *ssholes are really persistent and stupid leaving messages on our land line.
At the end of their message they warn you that if you don't call them back "they will have to come and put you in jail". LOL (great composition and so professional)
