Wildlife experts from the southern state have confirmed at least nine are known to have developed problems moving about but many more could be afflicted.
One bobcat is also known to have developed the same bizarre symptoms.
Numerous diseases and possible causes have been ruled out. But a definitive cause has not yet been determined.
Were working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and a wide array of experts from around the world to determine what is causing this condition.

That would cover it.
Orange Man is both the physical embodiment of Global Warming and an alien. lol
So sad. Beautiful animals.
I was thinking it sounds like some kind of poison.
You did the right thing. Sorry it went awry.
Funny story. I’ve made quick runs too, once with a violent storm chasing me back to Naples. Made it in time, no thanks to speed limits....I really loved State road 41, further south, especially at night. I’d open the sunroof and listen to the sounds of the swamp. My husband was horrified...”and what if a snake drops in off a tree.” Hmmmm
That explains why they haven’t made the Stanley Cup Playoffs recently.
Belly roll laughes

Wouldn’t it be better to wait for the results of the drug tests, before making accusations?
Not like the NFL where they are all juiced up!
Thank you. I will always have regrets that I did the surgery but at the same time his life wouldn’t have been very good if I hadn’t. I’m sure his age, even though he was healthy, is where it all went downhill. It must be rare though because in a clinic with six Vets, none of them had seen the autoimmune disease happen from surgery. They are the ones that sent me to Knoxville.
We had the surgery last fall with a 90% jrt mix (ha ha)and they told us the newest thinking is that the acl thing itself is autoimmune. The surgeon quoted and quoted to me as I questioned him (medical technologist). He finally made a believer out of me.
A few weeks after surgery this dog developed diabetes, also thought to be autoimmune. He is now just 8, and though we survived the recovery and he runs well now, his sight is going.
The whole autoimmune thing in dogs is very much in the spotlight - and certainly there are thousands of dogs who had acl surgery and went on to never have a second auto immune disease. They did not however all get past that first year risk of 50% that the other knee would go within one year of the surgery ( see below for why this is possibly a second auto immune response as well). And then too some of them had one of the other two acl repair surgeries, if they were larger dogs - which does not rely on scar formation to repair a joint.
The surgery your dog and ours had depends solely on scar tissue formation. The bands they put in will break in time and are expected to break.
The first phase of scar tissue forming is an inflammatory reaction.
This is the time that I suspect our dogs had a wrong path taken and some antibodies formed against additional tissue, creating a second auto immune disease.
There is nothing we could have done to prevent this from happening.
That surgery was still the best choice at the time for both of our pups. In fact it is the only one they do on small dogs I believe.
Very fond of jrts but recently have added a small fox terrier and a teddy Roosevelt terrier. Both extremely rewarding, just FYI. The TRT is 9, we got him from a shelter, and very robust and fun. The miniature fox terrier was also a shelter adoption and is a huge delight. Similar personalities to jrt.
We have several buried out back on our land btw. We will “see” our pups again. Never doubt Gods love and mercy.
New Yorkers?
I agree with the autoimmune theory. He was perfect before he tore the knee. The autoimmune disease didn’t start until month four of his recovery. I have Mountain Feists now. They are similar to the JRT. I hope they stay sound and fit. That year with kipper was heartbreaking.
Cute. I had to look the breed up.
You did your best. He knew that. Letting go is tough. Be kind to yourself.
BTW, I hope your pup is with you for a long time. If I had it to do over I would go for the more expensive surgery that they do on larger dogs. One of the Vet's 15lb. dogs tore his and they took him to Knoxville for that surgery instead of the "fishing line" scar tissue repair so it can be done on the smaller dogs. This is my Abby. Amy looks almost like her.
