This Cates thing is a big whiff, an embarrassment.
Ryan didn’t even run for re-election in 2018. He made the announcement April 11, 2018.

Cates should pull this thread and issue a big fat apology for tracking it into the house.

But why did the young Speaker of the House choose to step down in the first place? Nobody steps down from that position, it might be the second most powerful single spot in Washington.
Dis is totally correct about Ryan retiring way before the election; yet at the same time this brings up the question of “why did these weak/rotten/corrupt Rs decide to retire/not run again?” They must have gotten some kind of message from Trump/his people that the House was going to get tossed for its own good. I think there is a significant connection between the House being lost and all those rotten Rs giving up. They didn’t just happen give up spontaneously.
