But why did the young Speaker of the House choose to step down in the first place? Nobody steps down from that position, it might be the second most powerful single spot in Washington.

I proposed earlier in the thread that he did it to position for a run for President in 2024.
Speaker of the House is not a good position for this.
He will pocket a lot of money in the next few years, and (in his mind) enter the 2024 primaries with a full head of steam.
Unfortunately for Ryan, the REAL Republican Party, the party of Donald Trump, WILL NEVER FORGET HIS DUPLICITY ... or his stupid "Better Way" BS that interfered with the President's agenda ... or his blocking the subpoena powers of R.-run committees ... his shining on the POTUS about the Wall and even Obamacare ... his smarmy behavior to the President's tweets etc.
It is possible he is thinking about 2020; but I'm guessing he is fully focused on 2024.
He is quite delusional in all this of course ... except the part about making a LOT of money the next few years. (Just look at how Clintons raked it in when "Between" offices.
