Agreed, except for one thing. The person most resposible for what happened is Garner. Not the police.
responsible. Oy.
If you’re yelling you can’t breathe, you are breathing.
Are the “facts” as described actually true?
Don’t know.
I do know that back in the 70’s I was a Texas police officer and for over three years I applied a choke-hold many times and nothing medically relevant happened. No one died, no one was injured, nothing other than loss of consciousness. . .you had to know when the bad guy passed out so you didn’t hold the choke-hold too long.
We were instructed to use the choke-hold so you didn’t have to beat the bad guy into submission.
He did basically signal to them that he was not going to comply...
And then he didn’t comply.
I’m not sure what he or anyone else expected them to do differently at that point.
Chokeholds started being banned because experience was showing a disproportionate number of black folks suffered acute life threatening breathing problems that other people do not suffer. As a result most city police departments ban officers from using because the syndrome is well established, at least among black males.
I hear you.
“Regardless of how unfair...unjustified....unnecessary...illegal...discriminatory an arrest might be you simply don’t resist.”
I don’t agree with you about anything in regard to this. If that is “resistance” then I’m the pope. The guy only waved off the idea of being arrested and then was set upon.
I’ve seen some poor decisions in policing in NYC. Overall they do a great job and it’s a very, very hard job. This isn’t one of the finer moments. A man lost his life over next to nothing. The next to nothing being selling loosies.
Beyond absurd.
“If youre yelling you cant breathe, you are breathing.”
Or you may be exhaling your last. Both are possible.
Garner had been arrested by the NYPD more than thirty times since 1980 on charges such as assault, resisting arrest, and grand larceny. According to an article in The New York Times many of these arrests had been for allegedly selling unlicensed cigarettes.[14] In 2007, he filed a handwritten complaint[15] in federal court accusing a police officer of conducting a cavity search of him on the street, “digging his fingers in my rectum in the middle of the street” while people passed by.[8] Garner had, according to The New York Times, “recently ... told lawyers at Legal Aid that he intended to take all the cases against him to trial”.[8] At the time of the incident, he was out on bail for selling untaxed cigarettes, driving without a license, marijuana possession, and false impersonation.[16]

>>It also came after Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaimed that Garners family was going to get justice in the next 30 days during a Democratic presidential primary debate on July 31.
So the Communist mayor biased the investigation?
How much do loosies go for now anyway?
The choke hold was 15 seconds. 15 seconds. No way that was the cause of death.

If the cops had done what they should have done he still would have died, because he died from the inside out. He got angry and exciTed and his medical issues took him out. But what the cops should have done is but a man on each arm and leg turn him face down parallel to the ground, lay him down face first, apply the cuffs etc. At about 90 lbs a man it would have taken all of 5 seconds.
If that exact case had come to trial as a "resisting arrest" (and nothing else) I,as a juror, voting "guilty" without a millisecond of hesitation.
You,OTOH,seem to agree with dead guy that if you don't want to go down to the station you shouldn't be required to.
That attitude spells chaos...and it's the Rat Party's official position.Except,of course,for Republicans.
Glad you’ll never be a juror here.
Exactly, This whole thing is one gigantic farce. Garner went into an asthma attack and nobody did anything while he was laying on the sidewalk. That is what killed him.
Sorry, but this guy died for selling loose cigarettes!
The cop should have just run him off.
Maybe a little night stick action or taser, but come on,
