Shark sightings have prompted numerous beach closures ... doesn’t mean there are more great whites

“There was a day a couple of weeks ago where we had a pilot up in the air and a tour company who was out looking for sharks also had a pilot up in the air,” she said. “Our pilot was sending sightings in to us, and we were reporting them to the beaches and via the Sharktivity app and the other pilot was also doing that. So we had more eyes, we had more effort out there, we had two pilots out there, and because of that we were reporting a higher number of sightings."

A good account on how the tagging is changing and how more awareness is resulting in more shark sightings..

IMHO don't forget the Federal Protection is resulting in more new born white sharks making it to maturity, and protecting the larger ones.

Add in the local attraction of the protected seal buffet -Tom

It should be known that anytime one goes into the oceans or the Gulf, one is in shark infested waters and is literally surrounded by sharks.

They are everywhere.

Doesn’t mean you will get attacked, but it could happen at anytime.

I saw this movie. it’s great! Chief Brody tries to get the mayor to close the beach but the mayo doesn’t want to. I won’t say any more because I don’t want to spoil it for you.

I remember Castro was a big fan of the movie and showed it in Cuba, because it showed how Capitalism favored profits over peoples’ safety.

China has been illegally overfishing all over the place. Just go to your grocery store and look for fish that are not a product of the PRC. There are countries in West Africa that are having all their fish stolen out from under them. THAT is why we now have a shark problem. These fishy beasts are hungry!

It’s not even like China is using the illegally obtained fish to feed their people as very often the catches are being turned into feed for their fish farming operations. Totally scummy to starve West Africans for that, and to destroy entire ecosystems, and the press says not a word over here!

The sharks are taking advantage of their great white privilege.

No doubt that is a factor in identifying white sharks in place of verbal descriptions. -Tom

Gotta question the conclusion of chum for cage diving causing the increase of shark attacks.

During the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s the head boat fleets out of NY and NJ did a tremendous amount of bait bluefishing, day and night, with literally TONS of chum being tossed at Cholera, the Acid Waters, the Mud buoys, the Mud Hole, 17 Fathoms, the Tin Can Grounds and numerous other well known fishing locations. I don’t remember any marked increase in shark attacks then.

That is another theory by mankind trying to figure out what sea creatures are doing, and why they are behaving in a certain way.

There is no end to speculations-maybe it is because people use sun block or wash more often than people did in the past.

Of course it might just be more people in the water and more sharks in the water. - Tom

Sharks are a huge problem here in the Keys. If they are not eating our tarpon or snook they are taking our snapper or kingfish on the reef.We need to be able to kill just a few like before. Just enough to keep them from being apex everywhere.
