The Trump administration is urging Congress to reauthorize the National Security Agency's (NSA) authority to collect phone record information on millions of Americans, according to a letter obtained by The Hill.

Dan Coats, the departing director of national intelligence (DNI), in a letter to senators dated Wednesday urged Congress to reauthorize all provisions in the USA Freedom Act, a controversial law that is set to expire later this year.

Top Republicans on the key committees overseeing the reauthorization of the law are likely to follow DNI's lead.

Only if those that abused the program are punished with jail time!

Do both Houses need to approve the re-authorization, or merely the Senate?

It should not be reauthorized. Clearly, officials can’t keep themselves from abusing it.

Are you insinuating that our govt would overstep its bounds when it comes to our privacy?

Doesn’t matter, they’re going to do it whether it’s authorized or not. We’ve seen how little out intel apparatus cares about legalities.

Yup—this is a puppet show.

If it is illegal they will just rename the program and continue it using black funding or illegal funding sources.

If necessary they will just trade intelligence with foreign intelligence services spying on us.

How stupid do they think we are?

Answer: really, really stupid.

When a Deep Stater does something on their way out of a position that is about to be taken back by The Trump Administration, why does The Trump Administration get all the blame?

This infernal surveillance of US citizens by all the different agencies must stop. It’s a disgusting violation of the 4th Amendment. I can’t believe any court would approve of it. We would be safer without all these spy agencies. With them we are just like the old Soviet Union, just more high tech.

One point of the law is to buttress the "rule of law" myth.
It isn't just the intel apparatus that offends. Substantial portions of "regular" law are hollow and rotten.

NSA surveillance revealed by Snowden.

Hillarys modern day version of the FBI files and probably why there is a go along get along congress in both houses.

They all know the “ dirt “ is there anytime anyone needs to be taken out...

Couple that with Barry O’s obvious misuse under Clapper / Brennan and we can see the danger of a system that can go rogue ...

On a related topic re Epstein.

Probably the “ invites, set up meeting” all recorded.

Other item.. Wonder is the “ harassment slush fund” relates to visits of the island or other encounters....

Its alleged there were millions paid out and that list has never been revealed. Could it be in Epsteins alleged little black book.

The courts would be happy to ban such spying—except that the NSA has files on each and every member of the court engaging in illegal and/or immoral behavior.

Oops.

No, the program should be ended, or at lest severely limited. It’s in clear violation of the Fourth Amendment.

Call Congress at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to end this program NOW. Also, call your members’ local offices. And get emails. We need to make as many contacts as we can.
