The DIFFERENCE is that Russians understand that when the power steering goes out, the vehicle (airplane in this case) is STILL controllable.
We’re digital now, so we never have to worry about failures of these types and we just throw in the towel and give up (although thankfully some analog pilots, like Sully, were still around who knew better).

we were always taught to forget about trying to turn back to the airfield after something like this. Unless you’ve got about 5000 feet of empty air underneath you. And this was in a 172.
You’ll lose too much altitude in the turn and end up short of the field.
