Miniature Horses Cleared For Take Off As Service Animals

Miniature horses are among the service animals approved to take on flights, according to new guidelines provided Thursday by the federal government.

Service animals on planes has been the subject of much debate over the past several years, especially when the animal is a little exotic. To curb some of the debate, the U.S. Department of Transportation clarified which common service animals should almost always be allowed.

“With respect to animal species, we indicated that we would focus our enforcement efforts on ensuring that the most commonly used service animals (dogs, cats, and miniature horses) are accepted for transport as service animals,” the department said in a statement.

— James Kelleher (@etienneshrdlu) October 22, 2016 While not as common as dogs, miniature horses are known to make great service animals. They can live as long as 35 years, generally stand about 2 to 3 feet tall and weigh around 100 pounds when fully grown.

This doesn’t mean that all airlines are now obligated to board therapy miniature horses by law, but if they decide to ignore the new guideline, they could face a penalty.

The statement clarifies that animals outside of dogs, cats and miniature horses must be accepted or denied flight on a case-by-case basis.

Airlines will not be subject to punishment for denying access to service animals like snakes, reptiles, ferrets, rodents and spiders, according to the DOT.

The airlines have approximately 30 days to review and revise company policies in order to comply with the new regulations.

Here in Florida, it is too hot to leave your pooch in the car. There are places in most restaurants and bars for people with pets. For the most part, the pets are better behaved than children.

Avoid Allegiant Airlines. They removed the padding on the seats so they could get in a couple of extra rows. The seats don’t recline and the tray tables are exactly as big as an iPad. My knees touch the seat in front and I’m only 5’10” tall. After three and a half hours sitting on the rock hard seat, I was not feeling very charitable toward them.

This adds a whole new meaning to the phrase “when pigs fly”...

We just flew on Frontier. It wasn’t too bad. The seats don’t recline but that can work both ways.

That might give a layer of protection for a No. 2. What do you have for a No. 1?

Allegiant’s seats don’t recline because there isn’t room to do so. They were about an inch higher than other airline seats I have sat in. That created slightly better clearance for feet, a necessary condition due to the German Shepherd.

I think reclining seats should be disabled in this era of sardine loaded airplane cabins.

I don't know of an airline captain (and I know several, including my son, Ace) who would allow a horse of any size on their aircraft.

Yeah, I am 6’4” so I agree. I usually have the company spring for the exit row seats when they are picking up the tab.

Yikes!

Do you play poker? I don’t, but I think I’d like to play against you. You get bad draws.

And I paid extra for the aisle seat.

Same here, except I am 6’5”. I am glad they now charge extra for the exit rows. It used to gall me to be crammed into a regular seat while some 5’2” woman was in the exit row.

A few weeks ago in Carmel, we saw animal worshipers have their dogs in their laps at the table and the dog taking bites from their hands. Also saw a waiter (not ours) petting the dogs and serving!!!! YUCK!!!

Then, two tables in the outside bar were accompanied by their dogs who after a few minutes one lurched at the other and ended up with broken glasses!

If you cannot fly by yourself, you should not fly. Between folks that just cannot turn off their phones and computers and the animal freak worshipers, flying is becoming a circus.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

And this is just for flying.. Hell up here in the great Northwest we have employers that allow all manner of animals to be service or emotional support animals. After the 2016 election other than councilors being brought in there was a big increase for this sort of thing. I really didn’t know if I should laugh or cry....

How does that work? Do you have to buy them a ticket and they get a seat?
