Chinese fans might not be able to see their favourite TV shows or celebrities for 100 days after Beijing issued a ban on pop idols dramas and costume dramas.
The latest order, effective from today, demands broadcasters across the country air patriotic shows only as the Communist Party prepares for the 70th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China on October 1.
TV stations cannot show TV series other than selective titles from a list of 86 nationalist productions, which includes one that pays tribute to the country's first Premier Zhou Enlai and another named 'I love you, motherland'.
The announcement has sparked wide discussion on Chinese social media, such as Twitter-like platform Weibo.
A trending topic prompted by the news has attracted nearly 111,000 comments and one billion views.
Many web users seem to be infuriated by the mandatory policy, condemning the authority of stripping them of their freedom.
One user wrote: 'To be honest, if I don't like [entertaining] shows, I can choose not to watch, but you cannot take away my rights to choose.'
Another commentator queried: 'The question is how to define the entertainment value?'
A third person challenged: 'What ill influence will costume dramas have if they are shown?'
The thread proved to be so influential that the Weibo moderator has shut the comment section to prevent any potential criticism to the policy.

Sounds like something Democrats might do, largely already do - in reverse: Spend lots of air-time on interviews with stupid pop idols and fill the air with anti-American shows.
It’s A “historical” drama or a fantasy drama. Sometimes it’s one that infuses both. I put historical in quotes as any history is altered for a good plot. Scarlet Heart is a well known Chinese costume drama.
No point of owning a tv in China.
