Social media outrage may force the PGA Tour to address its slow play problem
SBNATION ^ | 10 Aug 2019 | Brendan Porath

Another viral video of Bryson DeChambeau’s interminable process illustrates how the social media voices of its audience, and more importantly, its players, will compel the PGA Tour to fix slow play.

It won’t happen because the media partners put pressure on the Tour to fix it. No, beyond an exasperated sigh or gentle chiding over a plumb bob, they are there to present the product in as appealing a way as possible. I once overheard Lance Barrow, the legendary CBS producer for NFL and golf broadcasts, bellow out on the patio at Colonial “we’re not journalists, we’re partners!"

It came the morning after another Twitter video showed Bryson walking off another shot in a process that allegedly took more than three minutes.

Thanks to social media — the voices from both Tour pros and its audience — it’s becoming an issue that will have to be addressed, whether they want to or not.

Because all golfers now have access to the best nutrition, exercise, and practice information they are now very similar in ability.

The only difference is luck in terms of the weather conditions during a particular golfer's round. So they stand there agonizing about exactly how hard the wind is blowing and in what direction so they can put the ball as close to the hole as possible.

The era of natural athletes dominating the sport is over.

They want them to sprint to the next shot or hole?

When our son was caddying (for hockey players), they realized something had been left at the clubhouse, and ask him to pick it up for them.

He took off running... until he heard them calling out!!!
He was supposed to take the cart!

They were generous and always asked for him.

One of the in-laws took me to the driving range at his club.
He is a serious golfer of some success.

I noticed that when he hit the ball it had a different sound from everyone else, and most stopped to watch.

And I’ll bet most of these keyboard critics on Twatter would give you a confused look if you said the word “Titleist.”

Higher clubhead speed + hitting it on the sweet spot = proper ball compression.

They want them to sprint to the next shot or hole ? D’oh it’s Golf ,LOL

Dude, since I retired I play golf nearly every day. Most groups will be considerate towards the group behind them. But every so often ... well actually about every third time out ... I get behind a group that thinks they own the course. They play from the tips though no one member of that group can break a hundred. They play down ... and then play scatter ball and spend 10 minutes looking for each others ball. They play honors though the rules now say to play ready golf. They walk at half speed as if they had all the time in the world. The last slow group from last week was playing a five some. One guy from this group as an example was on the green measuring up a two foot putt which should have been a "giveme". That clown did everything but lay on the green to line up his putt. There is now an official time limit to play ...Rule 6-7 ... which is routinely ignored by these a-holes. So no I don't want them to "sprint" to the next tee ... but playing as if you have all the time in the world is rude at best ... and is illegal according to PGA rules. Bottom line hit your freakin shot and move.

I hope they are outraged enough to reduce the football game time to closer to the 1 hour it should be.

I have to remember that, something to discuss, he is all business and golf talk.
My wife prefers that I not venture into politics and religion. Conservative, but more ‘old-line conservative’.

Give the players electric shocks if they play too slowly—that will bring up TV ratings!

Would you recommend a TASER for that application?

PGA golf is incredibly competitive. Imagine an NBA game that went on until the score was around 280. There wouldn’t be many 1-2-3 point wins, but there is in golf. Also, towards the end of a tournament to make or miss a putt can easily be a difference of $200,000, and even more for the 1-2 finishers.

My enjoyment of golf has improved dramatically since my doctor decided to put me on Zoloft.

My scores haven’t improved but my attitude sure has!

Shot clock. If it runs down you have to use a club of your opponent’s choice.

American Gladiators vs the PGA players.

One gladiator guarding each green.

A foursome would have sacrifice one player at each hole.

I played once over a decade ago for a work event.

My team came in third and I won “closest to the pin” and I think I had the longest drive. I was under a foot from a hole in one.

A senior colleague advised me; “quit now & and revel in your glory or forever chase the dragon”.

That was the first and last time I touched a set of clubs.
