The Daytime Emmys in 2020 will combine the Outstanding Younger Actress and Outstanding Younger Actor awards into one gender-neutral category, our sister site Variety reports.
The National Academy of Television Arts (NATAS) is also expected to announce that coinciding with that change, the new category will include performers from both broadcast dramas and digital series.
The Daytime Emmys already keep things gender-neutral with its Outstanding Special Guest Performer category.
The young performer categories first debuted at the 1985 Daytime Emmys, at which time they were named the Outstanding Ingenue and Outstanding Young Man awards; Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren, The Young and the Restless) and Brian Bloom (Dusty, As the World Turns) were the inaugural winners.
The gender-specific categories were later renamed Outstanding Juvenile Female and Outstanding Juvenile Male, before eventually adopting the Younger Actress and Younger Actor titles.
In 2012, the criteria for the two categories was tweaked, requiring that the nominated performer be aged 25 or younger.
This years winners in the separate categories were Hayley Erin (Kiki, General Hospital) and Kyler Pettis (Theo, Days of Our Lives).
The Television Critics Association Awards, held every August, are among the TV-industry accolades that similarly have gender-neutral categories (e.g. Individual Achievement in Comedy).
Your binary thoughts disgust me...
I have one word for Hollyweird: Hoist!
The good news is that this signals the beginning of the end of all awards shows, they’re silly anyway.
I can’t wait to see the trannies win over the females like they do in competitive sports. It’s only fair.
My mom still watches soaps. When I visit, I cant seriously wrap my head around the absolutely terrible acting and bland plots.
When I was a kid, I watched them because we only had one TV in the house, and mom controlled it after work for 3 hours as she watched the tape recording of them, but at least they had SOME interesting situations and talented actors.
Now? Just give them all participation Emmys.
The NATAS would do all of us a great service by doing the same for each and every award category.
They could then cut the presentation time in half, allowing good people the opportunity to retire to bed early (rather than be put to sleep in an easy chair by boring, self grandiose, conservative hating, acceptance speeches.) Blah!
“Will the left protest when the winner of the category is male?”
I suspect Bruce Jenner is still eligible, so as long as it’s a TRANS-male it should be OK.
Don’t care never watch it
this should definitely be in Breaking News.
So the chance to win in the category has been cut in half, denying a “younger actor or actress” the chance to win a prize.
So mean.
I thought the artsy liberal types were supposed to be caring and generous and encouraging....
Why stop at the younger versions ? Just go for it across all emmy awards daytime or otherwise. You alone are the best actor and since feminists rejected actress as a term the cis gender females should be ok with a level playing field against all genders, right?
It saves the expense of one trophy and a 15 minute rant against Trump.
