Apple Has Activated Software Locks on iPhone Batteries to Discourage Third-Party Repairs
Gizmondo ^ | 8 Aug 2019 | Tom McKay

Apple has activated a “dormant software lock” that effectively kneecaps third-party replacement batteries on some newer models of iPhone

Even using another Apple battery doesn’t work, according to iFixit, as a replacement battery can apparently only be authenticated using the company’s internal tools:

iFixit compared the practice to having a “Check Oil” light in a vehicle that can only be deactivated at a Ford dealership.

from what I understand what is happening is that if the battery is not the original battery you get a warning that the battery is bad from the device... some one who does tech support videos has done a video that explains it better then I could or the article. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlvlgmjMi98&t=97s

“low bidder”? Probably not. THat has gotten more than one tech company in a LOT of hot water over the years - especially when it comes to these volatile Lithium Ion batteries.

Serously? It is an indicator displayed in the settings app, in the battery condition setting. It isn’t a “check engine light” on your screen. It isn’t anything that “locks” the phone. It doesn’t change usability at all.

I've owned iPhones for over 10 years now. Never had to replace a battery. Ever. Not even once. Same with the iPod, iPad, and MacBook Air and Pros.

The batteries pretty much last for years. Why is this even a controversy?

The case law on this is pretty settled. You can’t lock your electronic product to prevent it from accepting 3rd party consumables like batteries and ink-jet cartridges.

While I too have not experienced any Apple battery issues, even an ancient iPad still functions.

But yesterday a neighbor stopped by with, at first it was two phones, then I saw the patch cord.

A newer iPhone weak battery and an auxiliary battery.

It happens.

Annnnnd... Now Apple... Because we still continue to put up with it...

If any other PC would run Apple OS I would change in a heart beat but they don't, same with iOS. That ends the discussion for me, I put up with it for the OS period, so do most other Mac users.

I do in the main think Apple makes a good product, I have 10 year old Macs that I use very day and they just keep on running, what more can I ask, except maybe a cheaper price.

I current have an up to date version of Linux running on an old vintage 90’s E-machine as a backup desktop right now. Just a few weeks ago installed the same up to date Linux on an old physically indestructible 2002 HP commercial laptop.

No... There are better options than just bending over...

The case law on this is pretty settled...

It has been a couple of years but I’m still pissed about it.
A new large-format Epson photo printer, my daughter stopped by to make some prints.

Seeing a nozzle plugged she pulled the cartridge to clean it.

That was a ONE HUNDRED+++ DOLLAR MISTAKE!!!
NOT A PROBLEM WITH HP, BUT IF YOU REMOVE THE CARTRIDGE from that Epson it is dead!!! I gave the printer away.

I can run all those operating systems on my Mac but I only run Mac OS now tell me again why you have a better solution?

I have had several eMachines in the past, cheap but dependable was not an attribute as I recall.

You have a vision of better that is a little different than mine and that is OK it is what life is all about. There is a Windows group here on FreeRepublic and I read almost every ping, but I never go to their thread and call the Windows people suckers, I am only interested in the Tech and the comments, why can't you guys do the same?

I had to get two new keys for my newer car recently from the dealer, because they had the chip in them, and they were $80 apiece

Check the web, there is a free workaround. You have to press something a few times, etc. People report success.

“E-Machine, cheap but dependable was not an attribute as I recall.”

No... they were proprietary and ran MS XP. With many restrictions that had to be approved by both to keep it working. Linux just eliminated all that and created an up to date machine using the basic physical hardware. Just consider what Linux can do with a tiny Raspberry Pi.

Because it absolutely sucks, and truly honest people just admit it... :)

I’m in that group with Dayglored also. And in with the fantastic knowledge about linux Shadowace shares.

What is locked, other than the indicator in the settings app? There is nothing preventing updates. Noting from prevening use as the device was designed and delivered.

That would be for the fobs that lock/unlock car. Many of those can be programmed by the user. Chipped keys must either be professionally duplicated (including the digital identifier), or programmed by a technician.

I think I have read about chipped keys on certain car forums, didn’t seem too hard.

It sucks because you say so. Got it.

Half the country hates Donald Trump and yet they can't name a single reason for why? Other than the standard memes bandied about on the news and web. I suspect it is mostly not what he is that pains them but who he is not. Maybe that is the real reason people have and unfounded hate of all things Apple and the people that use their products. I don't hate people who use Windows or Linux I just refuse to join in with them although I have had both installed on my Mac I just can't really see a need for them, other people find them indispensable, go figure. Fortunately in this country we are free to pick what ever we want to use personally even if the corporate world demands we use their established OS at work.
