Cruise ships are BANNED from Venice following decades-long battle by residents [tr]

They have been blamed for damaging the city's delicate foundations and blighting its famous skyline.

Now, after a decades-long battle, residents in Venice have succeeded in getting cruise ships banned from docking there.

The Italian government yesterday announced it would begin re-routing the liners away from the historic city centre, which draws some 30 million tourists a year.

The decision comes after a cruise ship collided with a small tourist boat along one of Venice's canals in June.

Last year we took our SUV through the Escalante National Monument on Utah. We went from Page AZ to Escalante through the monument. It was spectacular. The scenery and geological formations we incredible. One the 100+ mile jaunt we saw only two people...both cowboys herding some scraggly cows up near Escalante. The “roads” aren’t for the squeamish. There is a lot of beauty around...and lots of open spaces. We live in southern UT. You can get in your SUV and drive the BLM “roads” all around here. Once you are about 1/2 mile off pavement, there is no one around. The scenery is incredible.

As for disposable income.

Promotion of tourism is not purely for the “average” person.

A recent ad in the WSJ was promoting a special tour being arranged in cooperation with National Geographic.

It would be a very exclusive tour to 12 scenic designaiton stops across the globe, over 21 days and only for 21 customers, on a private plane. The cost? A mere $95,750.

And let’s not forget “space tourism”.

The sight of a cruise ship makes me the happiest person in the world. I love them. Wait until the retailers start crying poverty.

I plan on spending at least a month in that area when I retire next February. Looking at the AAA travel guides it seems like it will take at least a month to see some of the sights.

What time of year do you recommend?

Thanks

Cruise ships have changed so much! Massive floating hotels now. I prefer a ferry where you can actually be near the water and don’t feel enclosed. My favorite is an overnight ferry from the NE to Nova Scotia. You can feel the boat motion and scent the ocean. And food was not bad either.

That begs the question, as to how much of today’s Venice economy depends on tourism. If they severely restrict the number of tourists, it will cause economic problems with all the places which depend on tourist spending.

You are exactly right. Venice is nothing more than a tourist Disneyland. The entire city, while beautiful and intriguing, is one big tourist trap of souvenir shops and way over priced restaurants serving up tourist plates. The place literally shuts down at night as most tourists head out to stay elsewhere. Victims of their own success. The argument about cruise ships causing damage to the building pierings along the channel is also BS. Those ships move at a snail’s pace and are tugged up and down the very wide main channel to the port docks.

One of the reasons I’m anxious to go back to visit Poland before it starts to get overrun. Planning to spend next Christmas/New Year’s in Zakopane.

Escalante Nat Mon is very nice but massive and pretty much people-free. The “roads are rock, slick rock, dirt...the usual for BLM roads out in the SW. A 4 wheel drive is suggested...and an extra spare. The rocks sometimes are very sharp and slice the sidewall.

More “civilized” would be any of the national parks, state parks and recreation areas. They are mostly easy drive, easy access. Thee is sooooo much nature to see out here.

If you’d like some specific info, mail me later as I have to go now.

Also, don’t tour the SW in July-August. It has been 100-115 every day for a couple months now. You can’t safely be hiking around in the day sun. If you have a vehicle problem in the boonies, you had better be prepared.
