They have been blamed for damaging the city's delicate foundations and blighting its famous skyline.

Now, after a decades-long battle, residents in Venice have succeeded in getting cruise ships banned from docking there.

The Italian government yesterday announced it would begin re-routing the liners away from the historic city centre, which draws some 30 million tourists a year.

The decision comes after a cruise ship collided with a small tourist boat along one of Venice's canals in June.

The photos of these cruises ships towering over Venice looks so wrong.

I support this. Venice was never designed for this sort of thing. Tourists can disembark somewhere down the coast and take a bus, Venice is worth the inconvenience so they’ll do it.

Not to mention the damage they do via displacement.

Came across a few videos a while back. It’s nuts how they can affect the canals and rivers adjacent to ports.

Yep, good way to separate the truly interested from the merely curious We wouldn’t build an interstate highway into Yellowstone for the same reason.

This will get repealed within 2 years. Part of the complaint is there are too many tourists.

What economy is there in Venice beyond tourism? Glass? Masks? Money talks.

I agree with you.

But without overall limits on how many tourists can visit Venice at any one day/time, the dozens of tour busses will just be lined up getting into and clogging whatever roads can get them nearest to their tourists’ hotels.

“Too many tourists” is not just a NIMBY thing. Its a reality at many favorite tourist spots around the world. Even some U.S. national parks have to put up signs now and then that serve notice of no additional visitors at that time.

Never have so many humans the world over had so much disposable income to go touring ‘round the world.

File that under “First World Problems”.

Visited Venice last year, and took a water taxi from the airport, like many others. Cruise ships could anchor elsewhere, and get the same service.

Actually stayed in Venice for a few days, and really enjoyed the place. It's amazing it's holding up so well, but it would surprise me if it's still around in 25-50 years...at least as we know it today.

Venice is on my list of places I always wanted to visit. Going next year. Glad they have banned these monstrosities. From the pics, they just don’t look right in Venice.

I’m sure there is a point of ‘diminishing returns’, regarding tourism, such that too many tourists at one time = bad experience.

Reminds me a little of Yogi Berra’s comment: “Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore because it’s too crowded.”

Does anyone know when they started allowing cruise ships into Venice? Late 1970s? 1980s?

Don't worry, the dems have a plan to fix that.

I spoke to a tour arranger friend of mine. They are now recommending their clients NOT go in big tour groups. The restirctions on large groups are cropping up more and more. Also they suggest going in “off season” if possible and if that is not an otherwise bad time to visit the locale they are interested in.

What is also going to happen is formally little known places, that have been some folks “secret” for some time, are going to get morte popular and the quaint little place they once were is going to be gone. Aruba was once such a place - in the 50s and 60s.

This is just a ban on today’s monster ships from the central lagoon. It’s basically a small town with high-maintenance foundations. Such a move will likely enhance the tourist experience. They will still draw multi-million tourists per year.

The internet ruined the “secret” places that typically were only know to locals.

In my area all of the “secret” swimming holes and formerly seldom used and hard to find hiking trails now have GPS directions posted online.

That is absolutely true. There are hoards of tourists everywhere. In SF they’re thinking of charging to go down Lombard St. And as for Yosemite, you might get more solitude if you go to Disneyland.
