This will get repealed within 2 years. Part of the complaint is there are too many tourists.
What economy is there in Venice beyond tourism? Glass? Masks? Money talks.
This is just a ban on todays monster ships from the central lagoon. Its basically a small town with high-maintenance foundations. Such a move will likely enhance the tourist experience. They will still draw multi-million tourists per year.
You are exactly right. Venice is nothing more than a tourist Disneyland. The entire city, while beautiful and intriguing, is one big tourist trap of souvenir shops and way over priced restaurants serving up tourist plates. The place literally shuts down at night as most tourists head out to stay elsewhere. Victims of their own success. The argument about cruise ships causing damage to the building pierings along the channel is also BS. Those ships move at a snails pace and are tugged up and down the very wide main channel to the port docks.
