In March 2018, Kai, a golden retriever in Alberta, Canada, who weighed about 170 pounds, was taken to the vet to be put down.

Instead, the vet decided to contact Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue, who matched Kai with a foster mom. The vet told his foster mom, Pam Heggie, that his weight was making it really difficult for him to get around.

Today, Kai has maintained a healthy 70 pounds for months and Heggie has adopted him.

This is a crazy story (in a good way). the woman who adopted him took him to aqua therapy and ran him on treadmills and stuff. It must have cost a lot, and this was a dog that wasn’t even hers originally. She just adopted him and started writing checks, working hard with the dog. In another article I saw that when she first brought him home it took like 40 minutes for the dog to waddle up the porch steps. I was glad to see the dog running now.

Apparently, she had access to water therapy. Lucky dog.

I used to go to the public pool every day, for my *own* water therapy for my bad knees. It was very beneficial. That all stopped when most days, I’d get over there and the pool would be closed. *Floaters*.

What is wrong with people these days? ////rhetorical

Stoopid humons. Lucky Kai.

Glad the poor dog got away from his dumb humans.

“Oh, yeah, let’s put him to sleep because we made him so fat.”

Gotta wonder what THEY look like.

Don’t be too quick to put all the blame in the pet owner. Not everyone can afford decent dog food. And a lot of pet owners are ignorant about how much crap is in less expensive dog food.

I’ve met a lot of loving pet owners who just need nutrition counseling in order to better care for their pets.

These critters don’t come with instruction manuals, you know :-)

Sorry, I was unclear, and you thought otherwise.

I was referring to the pool and why people who are supposedly adults would allow their kids to defecate in a pool?

Spoils it for everyone. Water therapy good.

It doesn’t matter how crappy the food is. They fed this dog too much. It is totally their fault. Ignorance is no excuse.

Well...there’s a big difference between a lack of knowledge and a lack of common sense.

I mean, how fat does an animal have to get before someone realizes that they’re feeding them too much?

Feeding too much is part of it. Sounds like exercise turned the tide. Our dogs have always been in good shape even though we gave them access to plenty of food. We walk them at least once a day and have a large back yard they played in. Our miniature schnauzer stayed with a friend who doesn’t walk her dogs and after a week he was looking like a little weight gain but now back on track. Dogs need to get out and run and play, too many are housebound

We had a yellow lab named Honey. She was fed B.A.R.F. (Bones and raw food) once a day. trim and active. Gorgeous baby.

I ain’t buying it. Retrievers are chow hounds, but they had to be giving tons of food and no exercise for this to happen.

Don’t be too quick to put all the blame in the pet owner.

We know, it's Trump's fault.

Who knew, you've been hiding out for years here at the FReeper, and now your inner lefty is coming out.

Oh, don't blame the owner, blame the ...
