We are the middle children of history with no purpose or place. Our generation has no Great Depression, no Great War. Our war is spiritual. Our depression is our lives We have been raised by television to believe that well be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars but we wont And were very, very pissed off.
With the release of David Finchers Fight Club in the aftermath of the Columbine high school killings, fears about representational violence resounded in the popular press. This response was not surprising in that Fight Club tells the story of an unnamed narrator and the nihilistic Tyler Durden... who organises fistfights to rid men of their emasculation caused by a feminising commodity culture and an eroded paternal authority. In other words, violence is posited as a means of remasculinisation...
...What concerned most critics was the fear that the films gratuitous representation of violence might have a profoundly disturbing effect on the young men the film was marketed at. Other critics, however, praised it for its innovative postmodern style along with its exposure of the alienation and disillusion that wage slaves feel in American society.
Despite these conflicting responses, what most reviewers shared was a sense that Fight Club was one of many contemporary films depicting masculinity in crisis.
It would seem that the unnamed narrator of Fight Club mourns the loss of that ideal, a loss that is blamed on consumerism, the commodification of the male body, emasculating mothers and absent fathers. Before his creation of Tyler Durden, the narrator is a slave to the IKEA nesting instinct..."
Fight Clubs lament for the absent father is inseparable from the anxiety about women that prevails throughout the film...

It was a pretty good movie, but the final scene where half the buildings in downtown get knocked down made it decidedly out of step after 911, and it pretty much disappeared.
Indeed and if anything, I thought the timing of the film’s release literally the weekend following Columbine and just a few years short of 9/11 was quite prophetic.
Both Columbine and 9/11 profoundly affected our societal psyche and the unfolding cultural crises about to ensue.
Sorry, but I do not talk about that movie. It’s just my little rule.
I pulled out the relevant nuggets from a rather long-winded essay because I think the movie touches on some important themes relevant to all the violence/addictions/spiritual malaise plaguing our country right now.
And then he had to put in that fraud Freud.
“who organises fistfights”
To Nicola, did you even watch the movie?
It was a PRIVATE CLUB. Members only, first rule: “Don’t talk about Fight Club.”
Maybe a long weekend hunting trip, a Rugby match or MMA is too much for you too?
On a Field of Battle, a closed world of competition with rules, winners, losers, a beginning and an end, having Men be Men is a good thing.
Disavowel? Horseshiite.
“Robbed of these opportunities to prove themselves” . . . when has that EVER been the case, except by choice. Or through the Feminization of education
more blabbity blah blah, scholarly references and allusions STOP!!!!
Sorry folks. I tried to slog through the thing, I really did. Words don’t bother me. Foucault, Rousseau and Joyce are all very familiar.
But this drivel IS half the problem: The Protected classes telling the folks what and how to think.
This kind of crap is why the noted social critic and aurisophaginian M.G.Tyson’s words are so appropriate:
“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
LMAO.
Kudos.
I've watched this movie a couple of times. It has a lot going on in it. I don't think Fincher means it when he says his film should be taken as comedy or satire. I agree with you that the movie's themes are relevant to the violence & addictions we currently see. It also points out one of our culture's current blindspots: how to help boys become men. The first step would be for society to value true masculinity. Unfortunatley, I don't know how to get there from here.
Bingo.
Too much hand wringing, pearl clutching and overthinking going on with this crap article.
There is exactly ONE person to fault in each and every one of these bloodbaths. The sick bastard who squeezed the trigger.
You’re crazy. It’s a cult favorite with the ability to be seen numerous times.
The buildings were empty anyway. Operation Chaos saw to that.
Quit using sense.
I was being a smart ass.
I’ve probably seen the movie 40-50 times.
I do that a lot, too.
I’d say I’ll try to change, but that’s a lie.
