ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) An Arlington Police officer shot and killed a woman at Cantor and Collins in North Arlington around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
He was apparently shooting at a loose dog coming towards him, when the woman lying in the grass was struck.
The officer was not hurt.
Arlington police officers, the Arlington Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a welfare check in which the caller reported that a woman was passed out in a grassy area near Cantor Drive and N. Collins Street.
As the officer began to approach what appeared to be a woman lying in the grass, he noticed there was also a loose dog, police said in a news release.
As the officer called out to the woman repeatedly concerning her welfare, the dog began to run towards the officer while barking.
The officer walked backwards from the running dog while drawing his gun.
The officer fired it multiple times towards the dog.
After the shots were fired, the woman yelled out and it was apparent she was injured, police said in the news release.

I’m a jogger. You’d be amazed at how many dogs WILL stop a charge if you shout NO! and glare. Will it work every time? No, but it has worked every time I’ve done it for years.
Worst case, let the dog close, take a chomp and THEN shoot it in the head at 0.25 inches. I carry concealed. Being bitten by a dog is not considered justification for killing a human.
If I had shot every dog that charged me, America would be littered with dogs corpses. If the police want my respect, they need to behave at least as tough and at least as concerned for innocent people as I am REQUIRED to be!
“Feelings dont matter only the actual threat level matters. People are charged by barking dogs all the time. All this oanty wetting dumbass had to do was stop and see how close thw dog approached, and then taken it from there. He could have shot the dog from 6 inches if it came to it. This js negligent homicide at the least.”
The dog doesn’t know what a gun is and won’t avoid it. With a two handed hold you can block and fire. Point blank and pointing downward.
Local cops - SWAT team - opened fire on a guy who was coming toward the front door with a rifle when they broke his door down. They fired 71 shots, many unaimed (cops who couldn’t even SEE their target). Put bullets in 5 houses. Eventually paid $3.4 million to the widow.
FWIW, if I’m in the rear of my house and hear someone trying to force their way thru the front door, I’d respond with a gun too.
“Other officers claimed they saw splinters from the doorjamb being hit by bullets; the shots that caused this were determined to come from other members of the SWAT team themselves....A video of the raid shows roughly 38 seconds expired from the time the police briefly sounded a siren upon pulling into Guerena’s driveway until they shot him. At this point the five person team fired at least 71 rounds at Guerena in less than seven seconds, who died after being hit 22 times.
Guerena’s wife called 911 to request medical assistance for her husband shortly after the shooting. Paramedics, however, were instructed to hold back. Guerena was denied attention, for about one hour, until the team declared the “area secured”.”

“Dont blame the officer for shooting the dog but he definitely didnt take appropriate care of his possible stray bullets.”
I believe the officer was probably off balance. He was walking backwards while taking his gun out of his holster, and he had to act fast as there was a barking dog barreling down on him with great speed.
Nothing this Cop did was intentional as he was calling out repeatedly to the woman and received no answer back. He was there to help her, not hurt her. It was an unfortunate sequence of events that ended in tragedy. One lady dead and one Cop’s career most likely ruined.
Cops- You don’t have to love them.
Youd prefer him dead?
Sounds to me that he was the only one that deserved it. Whoever gave that idiot a badge and gun needs to go to prison.
Okay, the woman. Why was she lying on the grass in the allyway or whatever this was? Was she already injured or dead? Drug OD? Not an excuse for her getting shot, that's on the officer for not seeing what is behind his target, but curious just the same.
I dont think this one will get swept under the rug. This officer graduated the police academy earlier this year and was put on patrol for the first time in July per another report.
Apparently they dont teach the most basic gun safety at the police academy. An ordinary citizen would be looking at prison for the same act. This guy has no business carrying a gun. Period.
That did not look like a lab no more than Pocahauntas looks like and Indian.
“Lab mix” covers a lot of ground. I used to have a pit, and a friend wanted one for a guard dog, of sorts. He went to the pound, and there was a big black dog with a square head and an underbite The guy a t the pound said” She’s black lab and something else.” My friend said “Yeah, I’m interested in the something else. “
“Officers are supposed to be TRAINED.”
Yeah, I guess they should all be trained to just stand there and wait for a dog barreling down on them to attack with impunity while remaining defenseless. That kind of trained?
Do you have any idea how many Cops are wounded or killed by their own fellow Cops in the heat of battle? Stray flying bullets. Adrenaline running high. Dying by accidental crossfire. Happens a lot, frequently by our own military troops on the battlefield. Stray bullets can happen and do. Lock all the accidental shooters up, yes? You live in an unrealistic la la land.
I know a Cop who accidentally shot one of his fellow Cops in crossfire. The guy ended up paralyzed and my friend has spent his life visiting his fellow Cop in hospitals and when home bound, and living with the feeling of guilt for years now. However, everyone knew it was an accidental shooting, and my friend remained on the force and was a darn good Cop up until he retired. The Cop whom he accidentally shot never held a grudge about it because he knew it could happen to any of them.
“Cops- You dont have to love them.’
Cops. You don’t have to hate them.
Thanks, I didn’t want to watch the video.
Because I don’t love cops, I must hate them? You don’t seem to be aware of something called a happy medium. I suggest you try thinking a little deeper for a change.
“Because I dont love cops, I must hate them?”
The question is why would you feel the need to post that you don’t love Cops. Have you had a run-in with them? I see the Cops have just run into the face of danger at a mall in El Paso, TX where there has been yet another mass shooting. The police have stopped the shooting and caught the Perp before he could do more damage. But back to you and why you felt the need to say you don’t love cops. Bet if you were in this mall today you might change your opinion, eh?
Badge-lickers always pop up on these threads, you are new to it.
Somehow cops get to shoot family pets and skate.
To be candid, I dont really care about the loose dog on the street. The owner should have had the dog on a leash.
The woman, however, did not deserve to die. Some people on this board seem to think a human being can be considered collateral damage if that is what is necessary to save a policeman from needing a few stitches.
That is what I find repulsive.
Badge-lickers? Never heard that term of art before. Is that someone who admires and respects rather than denigrates police officers? If so I plead guilty. Define your definition of badge licker for me please.
