ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) An Arlington Police officer shot and killed a woman at Cantor and Collins in North Arlington around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
He was apparently shooting at a loose dog coming towards him, when the woman lying in the grass was struck.
The officer was not hurt.
Arlington police officers, the Arlington Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a welfare check in which the caller reported that a woman was passed out in a grassy area near Cantor Drive and N. Collins Street.
As the officer began to approach what appeared to be a woman lying in the grass, he noticed there was also a loose dog, police said in a news release.
As the officer called out to the woman repeatedly concerning her welfare, the dog began to run towards the officer while barking.
The officer walked backwards from the running dog while drawing his gun.
The officer fired it multiple times towards the dog.
After the shots were fired, the woman yelled out and it was apparent she was injured, police said in the news release.

Back in Jan there was a FReeper on the early threads about the Houston PD murder of a middle aged couple (and their dog) whose tenor and content was very similar.
In my #54 I asked if this was the same FReeper, but haven’t received any response
Because a lot of cops seem to be trigger-happy and make terrible decisions. For instance, the one who fired and killed the man in his own apartment because she thought it was her apartment.
You can criticize a black politician without being a racist, and you can criticize stupid cops without being a cop hater.
Did you see last night’s thread where the cop doesn’t manually detain a 65 year old woman, but tazes her on the ground? Another real man...
“you can criticize stupid cops without being a cop hater”
He was shooting at a dog that was charging him while barking, at a fast pace. That’s not stupid. That’s self defense and self preservation. Isn’t your hindsight wonderful?
Only police officers should be allowed to carry firearms. That’s the refrain we constantly hear from the gun grabbers. Ummmm... ;-)
Right. One thing I can tell you after four combat tours in the Middle East - If I wantonly fired my weapon and killed innocent bystanders I'd be looking at facing charges under the UCMJ.
Question: How come the rules of engagement for cops here in our Republic seem so much more lax than for us in a war zone?
Question: Why do you seem to be defending that?
Question: What prevented the cop from offsetting from bystanders before firing?
Question: What prevented the cop from taking well aimed shots?
Before you come up with another strawman - yes, I've been in life or death situations, and yes I've had to shoot at targets shooting back. NO - I've never sprayed indiscriminately.
This "cop" needs to answer, in a court of law, for his actions.
Arlington fired the last cop that tried that, actually.
Training is not the whole problem. The real problem is lack of gonads and an absolute priority of self preservation no matter what level of collateral damage might happen. Everyone and everything else is expendable in this priority of self preservation. They are trending towards a zero risk shoot first just in case work environment no matter what it costs those they work for.
Agree. It looked like a possible pit bull. Whatever the breed, it was in public and unrestrained.
Having personally been the victim of an unprovoked attacked by a neighbors friendly pit bull I now assume all to be walking time bombs.
Dont blame the officer for shooting the dog but he definitely didnt take appropriate care of his possible stray bullets.
Absolutely...
“Whats the girl laying around outside for?”
Really?
Mail delivers, meter readers, and garbage men have to do it all day long. They apparently have bigger gonads than most Police officers.
>>do you all not understand?<<
Tell ya what I do understand, if it were me in that exact same situation as a civilian...I’d be charged with man slaughter.
Granted, it would freak me out seeing what looks to be a pit bull charging me, but I damn sure wouldn’t open fire with a human in the line of sight. Good grief!
Really.
Incredible concept of judgement there... Are there ordinances against “laying around outside”? Is it politically incorrect and unacceptable to be laying around outside except only in circumstances approved by society? I suppose this situation is acceptable and her own fault because she was just a vagrant and should not have been “laying around outside” anyhow.
This.....
...and this.
Officers are supposed to be TRAINED.
Officers are given deferential treatment in courts because they are supposedly TRAINED.
Why do even civilians understand simple firearms safety measures that officers are supposed to KNOW?
Manslaughter at the least.
Best comment That I've seen that sums up the so called cop world
Both my father and my uncle were officers from back when “serve and protect” were the “rules of engagement”. They are very critical and outspoken against the shoot first and ask questions later situation it has now become.
