CASHION, Okla. - A 65-year-old woman was tasered and arrested in Cashion, Oklahoma, on July 17, after refusing to sign an $80 ticket for a broken tail light, fleeing from the police officer, and reportedly trying to kick him during her arrest.

Viral footage from police bodycam shows Debra Hamil refusing to comply with police when presented with the ticket. In the video, she can be heard saying that she had been driving her damaged vehicle for about six months.

"I don't think I deserve to pay $80 for something that is fixable," Hamil tells the officer while refusing to sign the ticket. She proceeded to tell the officer she would be fair with him and that he was "full of (expletive)".

A police chase ensued and Hamil continued to resist arrest as shown in the video. During the altercation, Hamil attempts to kick the arresting officer while shouting "You better leave me alone."

Hamil was dragged out of her vehicle, continues to resist arrest, and is subsequently tasered by the officer.

Eventually, the officer was able to detain Hamil who later told him "Yeah, I tried to kick you, because I'm a country girl."

“An arrest was made of a person on complaints of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer” and “Felony Resisting Arrest – Misdemeanor," Cashion Police confirmed in a press release with the bodycam footage.

Officials also said, “The person arrested as shown on the video is currently facing criminal charges in the District Court of Kingfisher County. It is the policy of the Cashion Police Department that no statements will be issued by the Police Department on criminal cases pending in the court system.”

A lot of people think the signature is an admission of guilt when it is basically just saying you acknowledge receipt.

Have never even heard of a specified inspection place for repair verifications.. is that specific to trucking?

I worked in educational television and $80 was (still is) a lot of balloons to me.

Hand signals are supposedly still legal, at least in some states?

Bingo. That would cover the turn signal situation.

With my dodgy old Willys, I use hand signals in addition to the electric ones just in case something died.

“if the driver fixed it and reported to one of the specified inspection places to verify the repair, the “fine” went away.”

NC does that with expired tags and inspections. Get both done before court, show the court clerk and it’s “dismissed” except for having to pay court costs.

A former co-irker (good guy really) built motorcycles from the frame up.

He often with a super basic electrical system. He used hand signals almost on any he built.

Felony Resisting Arrest – Misdemeanor

Now, what doesn't sound right about that.

Lawyers are going to cost a whole lot more than $80. And a whole lot more than a tail light.

I beat a tail light violation one time. I kept thanking the officer profusely for letting me know so I could go straight home and fix it. He must have gotten tired of hearing it, because after he checked my license, he just muttered ‘get it fixed’ and walked away as I thanked him again.

Somehow I think it would have turned out differently if I’d told him I was a sovereign citizen.

Geez! Without zapping her, granny probably kicks ass. Talk about becoming a laughing stock around the station house.

Very poorly handled. Cop needs some training in social skills. She was honest and cooperated and he could have given her a warning. He knew her son and apparently was predisposed against the family. A lawyer will have a field day with tasing of grandma. She looks like a real community threat. /sarc

Reminds me a lot of my landlord’s wife! She’s not quite as old but easily as mean or more so!

You should be nicer to her. LOL

We’re in Maryland. My son got that type of ticket for a brake light that was out (on a car that is titled in the name of myself and wife). As registered owners we were sent an automated letter from the MVA on the ticket after our son didn’t clear the ticket by fixing the brake light. To “clear” the ticket after the repair, you just take it to any vehicle emissions testing site for quick verification of repair or to most local police stations.

The letter explained that since the repair was not done by the specified date, the registration was automatically SUSPENDED. If/when your plate is run and registration is suspended, the cops IMMEDIATELY take the plates off the car. We have a lot of automated license readers in Maryland and state & local police routinely “run” plates they see on the road. So we were highly motivated to IMMEDIATELY remind our son to IMMEDIATELY clear the ticket. He had fixed the brake light the day after getting the ticket but, like many typical college students, neglected to have it inspected.
