Is the new 'fasting' diet trend healthy?
Medical XPress/JAMA ^ | March 22, 2019 | American Heart Association News

Time-restricted eating is one variation of a hot diet trend that also includes intermittent fasting. According to Krista Varady, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago, there are several types of intermittent fasting, including one meal per day, the 5/2 method, which involves five feast days and two days with restricted calories, and alternate-day fasting.

"With alternate-day fasting, people typically lose 3 to 8 percent of their body weight over three to 12 months," Varady said. And it can work with both low- and high-fat diets.

Weight loss is not the only benefit. In a 2009 study, most of the study participants also saw reductions in the so-called "bad" LDL cholesterol and in blood pressure. Other studies show decreases in insulin resistance, which is associated with an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. And diabetes is a risk factor for heart disease.

But those who use time-restricted eating can lose weight without restricting caloric intake, said Dr. Satchidananda Panda.

"The science and the benefits of time-restricted eating are very different from those of other forms of fasting," Panda said.

According to Panda, time-restricted eating is based on the science of circadian rhythms, which control every hormone.

Panda also has shown that fruit flies placed on a time-restricted eating plan have hearts that appear to be 20 to 30 percent younger than their age would suggest. Fruit fly hearts and human hearts are similar.

"It works by slightly reducing ATP producing proteins of mitochondria in the heart and keeping the mitochondria healthy, which reduces oxidative stress," Panda said, noting that time-restricted eating gives the body time to repair itself. "Most of our studies are showing that the effect is on multiple organs and on the central nervous system. It's a positive feedback loop.”

The idea isn’t necessarily to live longer, but to make sure the last ten years of your life don’t suck.

Just in case you are wondering - carbs are limited to under 20 total carbs a day, about the amount in a medium-size apple or a slice of bread. I get mine from above ground leafy veggies. No corn, carrots, peas, beets, legumes, or other root veggies.

I eat only enough protein to maintain my lean body mass. Too much protein will defeat fat burning.

The rest of my calories come from calorie-dense foods, like butter, olive oil, cream, bacon, beef tallow, coconut oil, etc.

I will be eating this way for the rest of my life. Do some serious research on this solution, and keep an open mind.

Dr. Eric Westman, Duke University, Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Stephen D. Phinney, Jeff S. Volek, Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, MD all good resources to begin your journey. You can find them on YouTube with some very good presentations.

There are also many conventions of Drs. nutritionists, researchers, and other health professionals that are on YouTube.

Best wishes to you.

Grow up. Someday. I’d bet my fitness exceeds yours, but certainly my grasp of reality does. You obviously know nothing about nutrition or history, yet you boast in your ignorance and call total strangers names.

When you move out of the basement, let us know. Until then, you are a waste of time on a decent thread.

I know something about science. If you ingest more calories than you consume or eliminate you get fat, less, you lose body weight. Only a few billion people prove this every year as a consequence of agricultural feast and famine trends. They do not “adapt” metabolically more than a smidgen. What is observed by researchers is probably undetectable loss of movement and muscle usage which is really hard to discern in a population under scrutiny. Many die of starvation.

And, it really doesn’t matter how much of those calories are fat, carbs, or protein rich foods. Overall health is affected significantly as you have found. But, not body weight.

I can see that you are “set in your ways”, Anton. There probably isn’t any point in discussing it further.

True. I guess when I said carbs I was thinking of the bread, pasta, etc.

The reason for my repetition above is not due to being “set in my ways” any more than your beliefs are due to your being “set in your ways.” Ignoring the insult, 20g of carbs is just silly when carbs don’t matter anyway. That is just common sense.

But, I am happy to end the discussion here.

As a soda substitute, I like filling my coffee mug with about 10 oz of water and 1-2 oz of red wine. The red wine makes it taste like an unsweetened fruit juice.

“I don’t know a fat person who has not tried and failed with fasting.”

There are a bunch of us who have tried and WON posting on this thread. Speaking for myself, after 8 months...down 35 lbs, total cholesterol slightly down, HDL up, triglycerides way down, no-medicine blood pressure has dropped from 155/110 to 125/80...and I have ZERO desire to go back to eating 3 meals a day OR to eating bread, pasta, cookies, etc.

The difference between us is I know what I’m talking about because I’ve DONE IT!

Serious question for those concerned about their metabolism slowing:

So what?

If your metabolic rate drops 50%, then you can live on 50% less food. In what sense is that a bad thing? Eat steak instead of hamburger because you only need half as much food! Eat salmon because, in the quantities you now eat, you can afford it!

I’m certain my metabolism has slowed over the last 8 months. I eat a lot less. So...I eat more expensive foods and probably STILL spend less money. What is the downside?

My theory: Our bodies try to cope with ou eating too much by increasing our metabolism. But the increase lags and thus we gain weight.

Still, no one can live without eating at all, so if our metabolism slows...JUST EAT LESS!

Here is where I disagree with a lot of low-carb fans: I do NOT find intermittent fasting and kinda keto allows me to eat unlimited foods when I eat. I find there are still times during the day or week where I will feel hungry.

So what? Feeling hungry is NOT the end of the world. That is part of what IF has taught me. It is OK to be hungry for a few hours. I can run 4 miles while hungry. It just is not a big deal.

I think a huge part of IF for me has been learning I can feel hungry...and still function fine. The keto part has helped me understand that if my eating includes ample fats, then when I am hungry, I won’t feel faint and won’t get terrible headaches.

So...I’m hungry sometimes? What does it matter? EMBRACE sometimes feeling hungry. That is your body learning to live on its fat reserves.

And if your metabolism slows, just EAT LESS. And eat better, because you can afford too. Win-win.

Sorry to all. Didn’t realize how old this thread is - from August. Guess IF & Keto don’t prevent me from sometimes being stupid...

You are not only stupid, you are lazy and impulsive. I have lost 52 pounds in 14 months calorie counting and never regaining a pound. My numbers are spectacular. I eat everything I want and when. Just not as much.

Totally my fault. I was the one who resurrected the thread without realizing its age. I usually don't comment, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That’s the key to how I lost 20 pounds in the last month. Knowing that your body naturally fasts when you are asleep. I weigh my self in the evening prior to bed then again in the morning I always lose some weight. Simple test to do at home. Then I try to judge what I need to eat or even eat that day. check my self again before bed and see how I did. Make adjustments daily according to your needs. Got 20 more to go to be where I want to.

It works well for me and is easy to not be so strict with things. I sometimes eat once a day. Sometimes I eat too much in a given day Sometimes I dont eat until I deal like I really need something. But the daily adjustment is key.

I also like to walk and stand more then sit.
