US Secret Service switching to 9mm Glock pistols

The United States Secret Service is moving forward with plans to outfit its agents with Glock 9 millimeter (mm) pistols to replace the agency's existing Sig Sauer .357-caliber duty weapons -- part of a larger move among U.S. law enforcement agencies towards the lighter, more efficient guns.

“The Secret Service has been one of the few agencies that has maintained Sig Sauer as a permanent duty weapon for more than 20 years,” said Donald J. Mihalek, a retired senior Secret Service agent and ABC News contributor.

The Secret Service and Glock declined to comment on the move, but a federal official with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed the agency's plan to switch to the Glock 9 mm pistols. Details of the new deal were recently posted on fedbizops.gov, the federal government's website for posting procurement opportunities above $25,000 for private sector companies.

The Secret Service -- whose primary mission is to protect presidents, vice-presidents and their families -- employs about 3,200 special agents, 1,300 uniformed officers and more than 2,000 other support personnel, according to its website.

"Right down to whose palm gets greased filling multimillion dollar contracts."

I don't know a single major gun company that makes 9mm's that doesn't also make 40 cal and 45 acp so that doesn't wash. I found the study very convincing - you should at least read it and make you own conclusions based on that. And, you should still stick with whatever you feel most comfortable and confident with - I won't argue with any person who says they just feel more confident and accurate with a 45. The greatest round in the world is useless if you don't hit what you are aiming at.

I suspect there is a correlation between magazine size and number of rounds expended, yes. Funny, that.

There’s numerous reports over the years of multiple officers emptying magazines dozens or even hundreds of rounds fired, and nobody hit anything. At least the “bad guy” anyways.

I admit I’ve never held a handgun, but I’m thinking efficiency is likely less about the weapon and more about range time...?

Oh, you don't know the real pleasure that just shooting at targets can give you.

Go to a range that rents pistols and after a few lessons, try shooting a 22 pistol.

Absolutely no "kick" from the gun and nothing but pure fun.

If you don't have fun, send me the bill.

I won't pay it but I'll commiserate with you.

That is very true!
I never liked the trigger feel or the accuracy but it was still a fine weapon for a daily carry.

Expensive compared to what? Their pricing is below their quality level. Pretty they are not, but i would trust my life to one.

This isn't that hard to understand for an unpracticed shooter. A cool thing to do with a laser sight on a handgun. Empty the gun for dry firing. Have someone who isn't practiced take the gun - tell them to hold the laser dot on a fixed point on the wall and dry fire 5 times as fast as they can. You will see that laser dot bounce back and forth all over the wall with a very wide radius. Especially with a revolver due to the heavier trigger pull.

They would be referring to the 357 sig round which is a 40 s&w necked down to 9 mm. Glock also produces pistols in this caliber.

Sure, so the problem the. is the more rounds they get, the worse shots they are.

Not so great for innocent passersby, windows, cars, dogs etc. “Spray & Pray”.

Bought my 5.7 when they first came out, @799.00, love it when guns appreciate in value, my best is my H&K SP-89 though.

Yes, I’ve been suitably chastened about that by about a dozen people by now. Forgive me for thinking there was still some sanity left in at least one government agency. I promise not to let that happen again.

I don't know about that. I'm sure they would be just a bad a shot with 6 rounds as with 15, you can just do a lot more damage with 15 errant rounds. If you don't practice regularly, in a stress situation with the adrenaline flowing you will have poor shooting discipline regardless of how man rounds are in the magazine or cylinder.

I see a lot of the inevitable 9mm vs .45 here. That reminded me of a paper I wrote in college. It was called 'The Advantages Of The Semiautomatic Pistol In American Law Enfocement'. I think it was about 1988 or so, before Glock took over that market. A lot of agencies at that time were transitioning from revolver to pistol.

As part of my research, I went to the local Georgia State Patrol office. At that time Troopers had a choice of Smith & Wesson 4506, or 5906.

I was lucky enough to interview two troopers. The one who carried the .45 said, 'More stopping power', and the one who carried the 9mm said, 'More firepower'.

So that argument has been going on for a long time. Actually these days, all duty ammo, 9mm, .40, .45, is all loaded to the same standards. So it doesn't really matter what you carry.

Exactly right, 9mm has gotten way better over the last number of years, when I started carrying it was in .40, but switched to 9mm about 7 years ago.

“I don’t know about that”.

Well I do. Read the news sometime, check out the body cam videos. The problem is they aren’t generally good shots.

Difficult to find a place to shoot that far around here, without having to drive several miles, place targets, drive to another ridge, have to drive back to check groups. And, as soon as you get set up, someone might drive onto your target area. Hitting a paper plate at 100 to 200 yards, regardless of angle, is plenty good enough.

Fudd: noun a person often a gun owner who is too slow to realize their antiquated ideas on firearms and the second amendment is merely used by those on the left as propaganda. Ex: All you NEED is... Dickweed
