The defending national champion Clemson Tigers start the season the way they finished in January -- atop the Amway Coaches Poll.
The Tigers received 59 of 65 first-place votes in the poll, released Thursday, giving them the top spot in the preseason coaches ranking for the first time in school history. No. 2 Alabama received the other first-place votes.
The 1-2 ranking for Clemson and Alabama comes as little surprise heading into the season, as both teams are favorites to make it back to the College Football Playoff, with the potential to meet for the fifth straight time in the playoffs. The programs have split the past four national championships.

That said Clemson is the correct choice to be #1, they are undefeated, returning champion QB, and I believe mostly the same staff.
Bama again has a bunch of new assistant coaches for another year, that is taking a toll. Bama has the talent but St Nick must be frustrated in having to train new coaches for the 3rd (?) year in a row.
Dabo has created a dynasty in Clemson. Go Tigers!

But if Clemson continues to roll expect several of his staff to be offered head coaching jobs in December. Losing 1 is manageable, but 2 or more starts to be very distracting.
But I fully expect Clemson and Bama to collide in the CFP again.

Thats been my fear. Brent Venables is the one that concerns me. I believe several colleges would love to have him as a head coach, and some pro teams as an assistant.
