Gillette Loses Billions after Shaming Men in Ad Campaign
PJ Media ^ | 1 Aug, 2019 | Jim Treacher

…...Consumers, men in particular, must be made to feel worthless. They have to be reminded that their needs and desires are wrong under any circumstances, that their instincts are loathsome, that their very existence is a malignancy, and that they're responsible for all the world's ills whether they want to admit it or not.

Now give them your money, you piece of garbage.

But hey, maybe I was wrong. Maybe this was a good idea. How is it working out for Gillette? Douglas Ernst, Washington Times:

Gillette’s infamous “toxic masculinity” ad may cost Procter & Gamble more than anyone imagined in January.

The year that Gillette launched its “We Believe” campaign and asked “Is this the best a man can get?” has coincided with P&G’s $8 billion non-cash writedown for the shaving giant.

That's 8 billion. With a b.

"Went to Schick - actually gives a better shave than Gillette - as if I needed a reason not to go back...."

I went to Schick also.

I went from the Gillette Mach3(I think) to the Schick Hydro 3 blade - retired, so I shave only two or three times each week, but the blade(s) I put in three months ago is(are) still going strong - smooth, very little pulling unless I haven’t shaved for five or so days - very very few nicks in all those saggy, creasy places that are usually hard to reach - so far seems a good switch.....

We’ve been strictly a Schick family for years now. That said, I did own PG stock, which I sold immediately after seeing that disgraceful ad. I’m glad I did.

I use Wilkinson Sword blades myself, and have for many, many years.

I use a Merkur razor and Wilkinson Sword blades. I’m old school so I use a badger brush and different soaps, depending on what deal I can get.

[It’s not misleading that they have lost significant market share in the razor business

Declining 11 of past 12 quarters

No question the ad campaign failed and failed badly]

I can’t imagine it’s a major growth business. They’re on the wrong end of the price scale for growth. They sell razors at premium prices. Everyone with facial hair already uses razors. I don’t really follow the sector, but intuitively it would seem that the problem for the whole sector is cheap no-name multi-blade razors at dollar stores.

Maybe a year ago, I found a still new package of double edge blades in my medicine cabinet. I knew I still had a couple of old razors in my kit.

I found one and decided to give the old double edge a try. I did go the whole route, placing a hot towel on my face then using shaving cream.

I was a bit surprised that it was a totally acceptable shave. Not quite as good as the 3 or 2 bladed ones I currently use but certainly not that bad.

I showed that ad to 2 millennial conservatives I work with. Both solid guys. However, both of them saw “nothing wrong with what they are saying” in that ad. I contained my explosion, and as calm as I could asked them several questions about it pointing them to the end, which was, “What business does a razor company have with lecturing men on how they feel men should act!?” “Screw Gillette! Make the best razors for the best price. And make you money that way. No need to insult and toss allegations out there.”
Both after thinking about it agreed. Be vigilant.

I use an electric razor, so I don’t have a dog in this hunt.

But I wouldn’t buy Gillette products for any price now.

“Buy my product, you scumbag” is not a compelling sales pitch to me.

Here is P&Gs explanation

Really? What are Schick sales at? If true, they are in the dumpster too.

At the beginning of the year Edgewell Products (Shick owners) share price was $37.22. As of yesterday the stock was $30.54. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that is dumpster territory,

Gillette CEO: $8 Billion Loss over Woke Ads ‘Worth Paying’

Gillette CEO Gary CoombeProcter & Gamble
DAVID NG2 Aug 2019Los Angeles, CA352

Gillette CEO and president Gary Coombe is defending the $8 billion write-down Procter & Gamble experienced last quarter related to his brand, saying in a recent interview that it was “worth paying” and that he doesn’t mind alienating some customers.

Coombe told Marketing Week that the loss was “a price worth paying” as the 188-year-old maker of razors, blades and other grooming products contends with dwindling sales.

“It was pretty stark. We were losing share, we were losing awareness and penetration, and something had to be done,” Coombe said. He said Gillette decided to “take a chance in an emotionally-charged way.”

Gillette debuted a commercial in January that not only spotlighted the #MeToo movement but attacked traditional masculinity. In a series of scenes, the commercial depicted men and boys engaging in sexual harassment, bullying and workplace condescension towards women.

“Is this the best a man can get?” the commercial asked, inverting Gillette’s famous tagline “the best a man can get.”

Another ad debuted in May showing a transgender male youth learning how to shave. Gillette also attacked traditional feminine beauty in ads for its Venus razors for women, featuring obese and transexual models.

The commercials received widespread pushback on social media. Coombe told Marketing Week that the backlash was more intense than he expected, but that he doesn’t regret running them.

“I don’t enjoy that some people were offended by the film and upset at the brand as a consequence. That’s not nice and goes against every ounce of training I’ve had in this industry over a third of a century,” he said.

“But I am absolutely of the view now that for the majority of people to fall more deeply in love with today’s brands you have to risk upsetting a small minority and that’s what we’ve done.”

Coombe said the ads were an attempt to capture millennial consumers, many of whom have defected to competitors like Dollar Shave Club and Harry’s.

“The worst thing during that period was, we also lost connection with the millennial generation. Gillette quickly became the brand of the millennial generation’s dads,” he said.

Gillette reported a $8 billion write-down during the recent fiscal fourth quarter, pushing its parent company Proctor & Gamble into a loss for the period.

The company blamed the loss on currency fluctuations as well as “market contraction” due to the continued fad of men growing out facial hair.

“Best thing to do is buy private label, as store brands are kicking branded products ass. This about groceries, but same applies to HBO products: “Store Brands Cut Into Big Food”.

My wife has a group of friends, who are really good cooks, who share suggestions re how to save money and not cut down on the quality.

During the Obama depression, they discussed using good house brand food products. They tried various canned food brand products.

They and their end consumers had zero problems with these products and results. Dinner guests were surprised when told that part of the dinners served came from Costco or Walmart.

They concluded the biggest savings were from Costco and Walmart with their regular products. Next, were the store brands from Safeway and Raleys when they were on sale.
