A day of commemorations started in Poland on Thursday to mark 75 years since the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, a bloody WWII insurgency against the city's German occupiers.
Polands Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid tribute to the insurgents early in the day, saying there wouldnt be a free Poland if not for their heroic struggle.

It Is important to note that the Poles lost only because the nearby Soviet army refused to help. Stalin wanted the Nazis to slaughter the resistance fighters. Because those Poles were nationalists, and not communists.
I suppose todays communists would agree with that.
A terrible, horrible tragedy. Stalin had the Red Army sit just outside Warsaw until the Germans had defeated the Home Army. He was determined that the Soviet puppet Lublin Polish government would rule post-War Poland, not the Government-in Exile in London.
It also has to be said that at this stage of the war the Nazis had nothing to gain by crushing the uprising (nor expend resources in the process) and in fact politically much to gain by pulling back and letting the Poles declare a free government.

True. But Hitler hated the Poles and wanted the country to be destroyed. After Jews were killed, the next target was the Poles.
in 1610 Poland actually conquered Moscow and put its prince on the Tsar's throne. The problem was that he was Catholic and this caused an Orthodox reaction.
Also, until the late 1700s Germany wasn't united and the Poles had good relations with the various German statelets - remember that Poland during the 30 years war said "we are neutral. We are a Catholic country but we freely allow Calvinists, Lutherans, even Unitarians to practice their religion here. The only condition is live and let live"
