A day of commemorations started in Poland on Thursday to mark 75 years since the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, a bloody WWII insurgency against the city's German occupiers.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid tribute to the insurgents early in the day, saying “there wouldn’t be a free Poland” if not for their heroic struggle.

It Is important to note that the Poles lost only because the nearby Soviet army refused to help. Stalin wanted the Nazis to slaughter the resistance fighters. Because those Poles were nationalists, and not communists.

I suppose today’s communists would agree with that.

A terrible, horrible tragedy. Stalin had the Red Army sit just outside Warsaw until the Germans had defeated the Home Army. He was determined that the Soviet puppet Lublin Polish government would rule post-War Poland, not the Government-in Exile in London.

It also has to be said that at this stage of the war the Nazis had nothing to gain by crushing the uprising (nor expend resources in the process) and in fact politically much to gain by pulling back and letting the Poles declare a free government.

All true, but that wasn’t the perception of their insane leader.

It is the Poles misfortune to be stuck between the Germans and the Russians.

True. But Hitler hated the Poles and wanted the country to be destroyed. After Jews were killed, the next target was the Poles.

the thing is that's recent

in 1610 Poland actually conquered Moscow and put its prince on the Tsar's throne. The problem was that he was Catholic and this caused an Orthodox reaction.

Also, until the late 1700s Germany wasn't united and the Poles had good relations with the various German statelets - remember that Poland during the 30 years war said "we are neutral. We are a Catholic country but we freely allow Calvinists, Lutherans, even Unitarians to practice their religion here. The only condition is live and let live"

Poland's downfall was:

  1. Losing the Jagiellon dynasty
  2. Putting in the Vasa dynasty who were Swedish and got involved in Swedish politics - prompting the Deluge (Potop) -- the Swedes killed off 33% of the population and took treasures to Stockholm that they refuse to return to this day
  3. the Vasa king also had the Prince of Prussia as a nephew which is why it was not fully integrated into the Polish crown. If they had, then no Prussia
  4. Oppressing the Ruthenians causing the Khemelnitsky uprising
  5. putting the veto condition for parliament
