MADISON, Wis. - A Madison teen was arrested after calling 911 early Sunday morning and asking police for a ride home.
According to the incident report, police were dispatched to S. Segoe Road at 12:05 a.m. after the 17-year-old male kept calling 911 to ask for a ride.
Authorities said police arrived to the address and made contact with the teen to see if they could help him, but he was uncooperative and refused to provide any personal information. An officer told the teen the Madison Police Department was not a taxi service and that 911 should only be called for emergencies.
Police said he was taken to the Dane County Jail after being arrested on a tentative charge for unlawful use of an emergency telephone number.

"The incident report said the officer warned that the teen's behavior could lead to him being arrested. As soon as the officer drove away, the teen called 911 once again."
Democrat voter. I guarantee.

Seems overkill and inappropriate to arrest him. He was asking for help! Help him, point him to where he can get help. Arresting him is ridiculous. Okay, maybe the article is missing some information that would suggest arresting is better outcome, but I still think it is wrong. The police were being jerks.

If he had called the non emergency number he probly woulda been ok. I suspect the thought by the police is that his calls may have tied up a 911 operator that someone that had a real emergency might have needed. just my 2 cent.

I did contract work at the old DOT building near there. You are right that it is near University buildings. It is not exactly the party center for 12 AM, though.

Doubt it. They arrested him. Of course they did...that's part of the plan. The cops arrest a fine young man "of color" in violation of his civil rights and he sues for millions!
You see...I have the drill down cold! :-)

I disagree. He was a repeater and he was fairly and kindly warned. He immediately broke the law anyway, knowing he was acting unlawfully.
Police response costs money and time, and draws emergency systems away from real emergencies. With one stupid kid it might not seem like much. but multiply that by 10 kids or 100 kids doing it 3 or 4 times each (it can happen. it's what he did) and you've got full-scale paralysis of emergency services.
He had his chance. He was told. Evidently being arrested is the only way to get him to pay attention. He ought to thank the officers for treating his courteously despite his obnoxious behavior.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. The kid was warned that continued behavior would result in arrest. 911 isn’t Uber or Lyft.

Seems overkill
reading skills. he called several times, thay talked to him about the law and HE CALLED AGAIN AS THEY LEFT.
Now what exactly do you think should be done?

But, you were first.

Well, as it pertains to the use or misuse of the 911 system have no sense of humor. They can’t take a joke, they are a tough crowd to play to. They demonstrate their displeasure by giving rides to the stony lonesome, a/k/a, gray bar hotel./p>
