We have an unsolvable problem here, and were just going to have to mitigate it, Capt. Tom King, a Scituate fisherman, said.
King has been studying shark behavior on the South Shore for decades, and he and other experts trace the increase in shark sightings and incidents off the Massachusetts coast to federal regulations implemented in the 1970s and 1990s that protected the populations of both gray seals and their primary predator - white sharks

There are so many towns , politicians, fishing groups, environmental groups and shark study groups and groups looking to make money on peoples fears, and concerned water going people, not to mention revenue from tourists and other groups that we do have an unsolvable problem on how to deal with Federally protected white sharks and people in the water interacting here in Mass.-Tom
ps Just telling people to stay out of the water won't help. There is no end to mitigating suggestions, and some ae just moneymakers for some groups. -Tom
Just outlaw sharks.
It works for guns, right?
Kill all the sharks: save the polar bears.
Save the Polar Bear, Kill Baby Seals...
What I hate are all those Shark ROBOCALLS. Every night around dinner, they try to lure me out on the front porch to eat me.
Remember white sharks are Federally protected and can’t be harmed. -Tom
Keep the beaches open. Remember Amity means friendship.
One of the knowledgeable Cape Codders told me yesterday, that there are presently vacation rentals available right now on the Cape and it has not happened before.
They don't know if it is the new tax, or the white sharks. -Tom
My guess is the tax................
Probably both sharks and taxes.
I removed our kayaks from our rental listing after the increase in shark activity last summer. Too much liability. Then I had to slash my rental prices this spring to fill weeks and still had a great week open in July this year. Renters don’t want to pay those new taxes on Cape....Almost 15% in some areas.
Rino Governor Baker should have considered implementing the new MA Lodging Tax in stages over the next couple of years....but as usual the government is greedy and they want it all NOW. It didn’t help any that the Chamber of Commerce pushed hard for the new tax.
Give all the swimmers hand grenades to throw at any sharks they see. Problem solved.
That was awesome, Tom!
Great to see FReepers doing stuff like this.
Maybe some day, if I can ever afford it, I’ll come up there and charter your services!
We’re gunna need a bigger boat, right?
What is happening down the Cape is the local officials who lose tourist revenue don't want to raise local property taxes ,so they grasp at solutions like a tourist tax, which between the tax and the sharks, might further drive down tourism on the Cape. - Tom
Only two things are certain: death and taxes.
Sharks are a distant third...........
Short term rental tax affects rates of vacation properties
We were on the Cape recently and heard anecdotally that income is off quite a bit.
Cities should post warnings to save their taxpayers from getting sued. At least post signs stating if you get shark bit, it's your fault for swimming in his kitchen. Of course, the city will be sued because the signs might be in cursive or not in 15 other languages.
Many beaches south of Boston and on Cape Cod have obvious white shark warning signs.
The ones I see also have 3 dorsal fins shown; one for a white, one for a Basking shark, and one for a Sunfish (Mola mola) to help in identification. -Tom
