GREAT RESULTS! Thanks to everyone for the help! From: A Memorial Day question about RVN JUNGLE ROT. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3752249/posts
After digging through many abstracts, a couple of dozen studies and the many good recommendations
Summary: After FIFTY PLUS YEARS OF THE CREEPING CRUD, TOLNAFTATE is the best Ive experienced.
Your Mileage May Vary, not all jungle rot /ringworm is the same. Three dermatophyte genera and 9 species are responsible for most infections in North America and Europe. https://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?bookid=2184§ionid=165459177
My review of OTC (Over The Counter) fungicides from the local Walmart.
Materials and Methods:
ALL APPLIED TWICE DAILY, and after showering. Tolnaftate 1% OTC (EQUATE) Spray Powder $3/150g
Miconazole Nitrate 2% OTC Desenex Powder $5/85g
Terbinafine Hydrochloride Cream 1% (Lamisil) OTC (Equate) $6/50g
Clotrimazole Cream USP 1% OTC NO CHANGE after five days. And it started to BLOOM!!!
Butenafine Hydrochloride Cream 1% OTC $5 / 12g https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3481417/ Tacrolimus Ointment 1% Rx required $300.00/60g $75 deductible
SOAP The dermatologist recommended using a mild soap, I DID NOT THINK TO ASK FOR A RECOMMENDATION??? Been using Dial Gold for a long time. Switched to Irish Spring Wash 5. Checking the pH by washing hands with a normal feeling mix. I see Dial=8 and Irish Spring=6. Yes very subjective. Using a recently calibrated pH meter. Im certain the type of soap is connected to the outcome, unsure if pH is the correct approach? The Irish Spring wash deodorant is not as effective as Dial Gold!
RESULTS:
TOLNAFTATE 1% $3/150g (Equate) Best to date, mostly clear in four days. All clear in ten days. I doubt it is clinically cured? But the symptoms are gone!!! The only anti-fungal recommended for use as a preventive. The generic (Equate Walmart) brand that I use is $2.96 and the can lasts ~13 days of twice daily plus use.
Miconazole Nitrate 2% OTC ( Desenex )Powder $5/85g Works well but does NOT finish it off.
Terbinafine Hydrochloride Cream 1% OTC (Lamisil) $6/50g Works well but does NOT finish it off. Flares up after long hot days.
Clotrimazole Cream USP 1% OTC (Equate) NO CHANGE after five days. And it started to BLOOM!
Butenafine Hydrochloride Cream 1% OTC $5 /12g \NOT TESTED/ Condition cleared by others. Does very well in trials: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3481417/
Conclusions:
After FIFTY PLUS YEARS OF THE CREEPING CRUD, TOLNAFTATE is the best Ive experienced. Tolnaftate pronounced as (tole naf' tate) Continue treatment for at least 2 weeks after symptoms disappear. A total of 4-6 weeks of treatment may be necessary. Maintenance or prophylaxis: apply once daily. https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a682617.html
The only nonprescription agent approved for both preventing and treating tinea infections. https://www.pharmacytimes.com/publications/issue/2014/january2014/fungal-skin-infections-management-treatment-ad-preventionn
Arthroconidia (Spores, VERY SMALL) can survive for YEARS embedded in scales of hair and skin: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3481417/ ...Tinea cruris infection in monsoon months in India. In India, Tinea cruris infection is caused mainly by Trichophyton rubrumwhereas in Western countries, Epidermophyton floccosum is the commonest dermatophyte.
Get real soap made with traditional soap ingredients, including fats such as coconut oil or beef tallow.
From the old thread...
#69
Lua Buom
Perhaps that means showering less and using a gentle soap which does not kill the beneficial organisms.
\\\When I had the poison ivy, the Dermatologist recommended the use of gentle soap, my wife had some fancy ‘oatmeal soap of unknown provenance. I attributed the improvement to the Tacrolimus ($$$), may have been the soap!! ////
My wife has a ‘soap display’, we think a friend personally made the soap?
After the many good suggestions and reading about soap...
I’m certain you are right!
Also, I see articles that just looking at the pH of the soap is bunk. Healthy skin returns to a normal pH 20 minutes after use.
All that said, the Irish spring is working and I don’t want to change.
But the Irish spring makes me STINK at the end of a hot day outside, no problems with Dial Gold.
I get bar soap from Stirling Soap Co., the same place I get my shaving soap. I shower pretty much everyday because I work in a very oily manfacturing environment. I have definitely noticed a difference in my skin generally (smoother, softer less dry), including the improvement in my dermatitis (redness, itchy skin, scaly). I also use bar soaps from Duke Cannon Co.
From my experience, Basis is a great mild soap. Manufactured and distributed by Beiersdorf Inc, located in Winston, Connecticut. Sold by various retailers, including Walgreen's, Walmart and AmazonIve even seen it in the Dollar Tree from time to time.
Also, eucalyptus is a known anti-fungal. Bouquets of it are found in craft stores that have a good floral section, like Michaels or JoAnn Fabric. Hanging a bouquet of it in the bathroom where you normally bathe may help, since the smell of it (and its essential oil) remains active for years.
You can buy eucalyptus leaves as a tea, as a bath additive, as an essential oil; and also its oil is present in Vicks VapoRub, which when applied every day to fungal nails will slowly heal them (clean with soap and water followed by a Listerine rinse before applying the Vicks and a clean sock).
I bought a fungicidal soap at Wal-Mart. This and antifungal cream seem to be improving mine. Never had any success before during the summer months.
I sent him a text about the drug and I'll get back with you when he replies. He may not remember since it was a bunch of years ago.......
I’m glad to hear you’ve found relief...I remember your previous thread. Also, the tubes of medicine you’re using are CHEAP...$3-4 a tube, not $30-40 with a scrip.
Bkmked your soap link.
Glad you have something that works.
On the tonail thing, is there anything that works for just the nails themselves growing thicker? I recently had to buy these giant wire cutter sized things that look like a hoof trimmer.
I bought a fungicidal soap at Wal-Mart.
Wondering what the local Walmart might stock...
I find this:
Defense Antifungal Medicated Bar Soap containing FDA approved 1% Tolnaftate and 2% of tea tree and eucalyptus oils https://www.defensesoap.com/article-defense-soap-not-just-a-ringworm-soap/
Then it jumps out at me!
Tolnaftate 1%!!!!
The very same! That is working so well for me!!!
Ho, ho, ho!!!
This looks good!!!
Not stocked at my local Walmart, no big deal...Forsale everywhere!
Then down the rabbit hole!
NOT ALL DEFENCE SOAP APPEARS TO CONTAIN TOLAFTATE??
Yes the stuff that is working so well for me!!??
I will find it!!
Thank you, this will save a step in my daily routine.
Tolnaftate is the only product recommended for use as long term prevention, just once a day.
lols...
I recently had to buy these giant wire cutter sized things that look like a hoof trimmer.
I moved to the heavy-duty compound leverage boltcutter type years ago. And recommend then to my friends.
Maybe too much jello as a kid?
Bill Cosby! His fault!!!
Like this and a diamond file.Easy peasy!
Note: I paid about half this amount.
Well I’m glad you’re doing better. As I said previously the Mometasone Furoate cleared up the spot on my right leg permanently and the scale in the hollow above my tailbone. I still have this right big toe fungus even after Tea Tree oil. It worked, but came back. I’ve been researching Colloidal Silver all day. I think I may give this stuff a shot. Maybe even use this in a nebulizer with Mullein and Lobelia now that I have lung problems (VA Induced?) My breathing stops now sometimes even before I go to sleep. What a terrifying experience.
My breathing stops now sometimes even before I go to sleep. What a terrifying experience.
WOW!
My complaints are so minor in comparison.
Colloidal Silver! I remember that from the cassette tape that was passed around called “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie”, the guy was a good speaker and it was fun, one of his products was colloidal silver, everyone I knew was taking it! Then some guy mega dosed on it and turned blue!
I hope it works for you!
Don’t forget a treatment for toenail fungus - it takes a lot longer to get rid of and can exacerbate/rejuvenate other foot “ailments”...most of the ones at Walmart work...but one has to be diligent and patient and go for a minimum 6 month treatment plan.
Ditto!
Yes, it’s crazy. I can hike 5 or 6 country miles with no problems. When it happens I just get up and stay up until I have to go to sleep. I need to try to re-teach myself to breathe from the diaphragm before I go to sleep. I just figured that out yesterday. My sleep study #2 (VA) last Thursday with a full mask was a disaster. 7 weeks later....
The colloidal silver is being used on cuts and such. I thought I would try it on my toe and ear canals. In some cases it appears to help skin conditions too. Maybe it’s worth a shot on jungle-rot.
I was interested in your original thread because I deal with this problem.
One of the posters discounted tea tree oil as something you could not use as a treatment because our problem is “to serious” for natural treatment.
I saw who that poster was and recognised it was someone who is either a troll or wrong about most everything.
To make a long story short, because of this, I tried it.
Thank you TG!
Two days of applying tea tree oil to my rash left me symptom free for almost a month.
You may want to give it a try. It’s over the counter and not that expensive.

All good!
(Simple answer, different bugs and they can hide for years)
Thinking I had tried about most everything, tree oil was new to me? Like, everyone, I have buddies with the same or similar affliction.
I have tried many of their recommendations, too many to remember.
Fels Naptha, Gold Bond, Selsun blue, cornstarch, boric acid(acid in name only), 90% rubbing alcohol, Ultraviolet light, colloidal oatmeal, ...
Plus the prescription and most of the OTC listed above and all the stuff I have forgotten.
NONE OF THEM PUT AN END TO IT!
I had not heard of tea tree oil until the older thread.
The problem as I see it, we are fighting different fungi.
Not all jungle rot /ringworm is the same. Three dermatophyte genera and 9 species are responsible for most infections in North America and Europe. And if you found this fungus in RVN is has to be extra special?
https://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?bookid=2184§ionid=165459177
Also, the little fungi parts can hide for YEARS.
Arthroconidia (Spores, VERY SMALL) can survive for YEARS embedded in scales of hair and skin: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3481417/ ...Tinea cruris infection in monsoon months in India. Tree oil, if you like it and it works, GREAT!
My current thinking, subject to change, Tolnaftate for maintenance (the only one with any long term studies and recommended for prophylaxis), the next couple of years, I can wait.
Someone up-thread mentioned antifungal soap with Tolnaftate.
That would simplify everything.
Being a Cheap Charlie Number 10 I shopped around for antifungal soap with Tolnaftate.
Found a great price over on Amazon; one problem, the manufacturer went out of business.
Tea Tree oil discovered by Aboriginal Australians suffering the rot long ago...Tolnaftate developed in Japan 1960s...
Are in the Public Domain and difficult for making big money. So only a few small suppliers. Nobody paying for studies.
Just need to find suppliers.
Tolnaftate Powder in Prophylaxis of Tinea Pedis
https://insights.ovid.com/article/00007611-197407000-00008
We studied the effectiveness of 1% tolnaftate powder as compared to its toic-cornstarch vehicle in prevention of tinea pedis. Inmates of a prison farm in a hot, humid climate (a high-risk group) were the subjects in this double-blind study. One percent tolnaftate powder was superior to the vehicle both in preventing tinea pedis and in eradicating established fungus infections of the feet.
Generally safe
When used topically, tea tree oil is generally safe and might be helpful in treating acne and other superficial skin infections.
Avoid oral use of tea tree oil, which is toxic when swallowed.
Safety and side effects
Most people can use tea tree oil topically with no problems. However, tea tree oil can cause:
Skin irritation
Allergic skin rash (dermatitis)
Itching
Stinging
Burning
Scaling
Redness
Dryness
Don’t use tea tree oil if you have eczema.
Tea tree oil is toxic when swallowed. Serious side effects can occur, including:
Confusion
A lack of muscle control or coordination of voluntary movements (ataxia)
Decreasing levels of consciousness
One study suggests that repeated exposure to lavender oil and tea tree oil might have led to the swelling of the breast tissue (gynecomastia) in young boys.
