Sorry AOC, but Equifax probably won’t be paying people $125 apiece

Those hoping to cash in on the massive Equifax settlement might be out of luck, thanks to AOC.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a call for those affected by the 2017 data leak to make a claim, saying they could get $125 — “a nice chunk of change.”

But only $31 million has been earmarked for the payments, and the more who file claims, the less each person gets.

If all 147 million entitled to money request it, they would get just 21 cents apiece.

The freshman Democratic Socialist tweeted out a link Friday to a page where anyone affected by the breach from the credit reporting agency could file a claim.

“Everyone: go get your check from Equifax! $125 is a nice chunk of change,” she said. “Get that money and pay off a bill, sock it away, take a day off, treat yourself, whatever you’d like – but cash 👏🏿 that 👏🏽 check! 👏🏻 💸 It takes one minute.”

BS: Equifax suffered a huge breach in 2017 that exposed information including the social security numbers of 147 million people. Earlier this week, it emerged that the credit monitoring firm will be fined $700 million–and $425 million of that is earmarked for people affected by the breach, according to a site set up for those impacted. Here is the Forbes article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/kateoflahertyuk/2019/07/25/are-you-eligible-for-a-20000-pay-out/#f92355ccbfd1

Puzzled about the original post. I went to the Equifax website and it clearly states that if you were affected by the data breach you can opt for $125 or 10 years of free protection. I filled out the forms for the $125. Seems legit to me.

Perhaps, but I’d be surprised if even 5M qualified people apply. People are lazy.

You only get that $125 if you can prove you spent >10 hours mitigating risks of the breach, including having current credit monitoring.
If you didn’t even know about the breach until this week, you’re not getting $125 - and that’s most victims.

Wrong. I just went thru the process. You get the $125 by default. You CAN get much more ($25/hr up to $20K ceiling), but you have to explain how you spent your time and provide documentation.

If you execute the wrong series of clicks, it seems like you have to provide documentation, but you do not.

I have a question. Who gave these credit agencies rights to our financial records?

I don’t ever remember giving them permission.

Probably in the fine print for every loan, credit card! cell phone or checking account you've ever applied for.

But to get the $125 you have to claim that you already have have credit monitoring. And that $125 per person is limited to a total of $31 million so if more than 248,000 people apply then the amount will be reduced.

#20 I was at Target yesterday. When I got home I had an email from them asking how was the visit.... I had paid for my stuff with my debit card.

You are being sold and tracked for less then the .21 cents you might get back from the credit companies. I get regular mail asking me to consolidate my debt from various companies too. How would they know what I owe?
They bought that info from the credit companies.

Target email:
how was your visit?

You can also get it if you bought credit monitoring. We did, and I just filed a claim. We’ll see what happens.

I uploaded proof we bought credit monitoring. That is one way to file the claim.

The Media and the Muffler

In a press briefing, Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said a wealthy taxpayer would be able to buy a new Lexus with his tax cut, while a $50,000 earner would be able to buy only a new muffler for his used car. The comment was repeated ad nauseam on radio, TV and print media.

Any credit monitoring system. Equifax tried to make it look like you needed to purchase their credit monitoring system. But if you read it carefully they’re asking if you already have a credit monitoring service. They allow you to go on if you say you want the cash instead because they can’t regulate that you will buy their credit monitoring service. So creditkarma geek wallet whatever it is if you’re using it you have a credit monitoring service.
