July 27, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 07/27/2019 7:18:06 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

A couple of screen shots to show y’all the disparity between here on the coast and inland temps just 12 or 15 miles apart…

Lord willing, I should have some fresh peppers in a couple months.

If you are in need of a fresh pepper fix there are pepper growing groups on Facebook with growers that sell flat rate USPS boxes full of peppers. Here is one example I used that grower to send peppers to my nephew in Virginia Beach for a graduation present. You can also save the seeds as you eat them and have plenty of new varieties for next season. Myself I grow 30 to 40 different varieties of peppers in pots on my terrace in Spain, mostly superhots but others like Aleppos and those Jalapenos for my wife. I have been making my own hot sauces, flakes and powders since the mid 1980's when the Habanero was considered to be the hottest pepper in the world. Nowadays it barely qualifies as medium heat.

I must have 4,000 seeds in the garage. LOL

Mostly from G/Y/O/R bell peppers.

But I’ve saved several hundred jalapeno, etc.

Everything I planted this year was from those saved seeds except the tomatoes which were taken from store bought. They were healthy while starting indoors. I hope they make it outside. They’re in the shade too for a few weeks here.

Guess I’ll see...

I have to grow hot peppers from seed. Spain isn’t big on spicy foods and the garden centers don’t have many types of hot peppers. Most have none. But there are Chiliheads around the world that share seeds so there is a virtually unlimited variety of peppers to try. Also, once people found out that peppers are super easy to cross pollinate there are new types of peppers coming out every day. It’s like Dr. Frankenstein on steroids.

Favorite way to have watermelon- drink it. We have a 40 year old champion juicer that will probably outlive us. Watermelon juice is the best!

How about a short thread slide? I would love to hear where you are from originally and how you wound up in Spain. Are you anywhere near where the camino walk goes out to the sea?

Made easily in a blender----so fresh watermelon slices can be used......no need for tedious chopping.

Watermelon Margaritas

PREP RIMS Rub rims of 6 glasses w/ lime wedge; spin rims in saucer of sugar to coat.

METHOD blender smooth 3 1/2 c watermelon cubes or slices, 1/2 c tequila, 2 tb sugar, 3 tb lime juice, tb Triple Sec.

SERVE Fill ea sugar-rimmed glass with 1/2 cup crushed ice; 1/2 cup margarita. Garnish with lime wedges, melon balls or spears, mint sprig.

CHEF NOTES: Doesn't need much sugar--105 calories a glass--bit of fresh lime juice brightens/adds welcome tanginess. For a special touch, rim glasses with lime sugar; garnish drink with lime wedges and watermelon balls or spears, and a mint sprig.

And a short forecast for the nation:

It has been a very good year weather-wise for gardens here in Eastern MA, with heavy rains once a week followed by lots of sun. A pattern that the 7 day forecast shows continuing, so that I hardly need to do any watering myself (the crowded garden, due to size and only the front section getting 7 hours of sun, means the ground does not dry out quickly due to sunlight). Thanks and glory be to God.

Ignore the dates on the photos: They are current, but I have no smart phone and am using a little camera and have not figured out how to change the date setting.

Yeesh! Is it too much to ask for 1 lousy inch of rain each week, versus none at all or all at once?
